Morgan State Drops Third Straight; Falls At Delaware State, 3-1

DOVER, Del. (March 25, 2021)-Delaware State's Alondra Maldonado recorded a match-high 15 kills and three Hornets finished with double-doubles, including Valeria Otero, who totaled a match-high 17 digs and 13 kills to help Delaware State defeat visiting Morgan State, 3-1 (21-25, 27-25, 25-16, 25-16) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match on Thursday evening at Memorial Hall.

Alayna Lacy had a team-high 30 assists and 10 digs, while Jelena Dukic also finished with a double-double, collecting 25 assists and 10 digs. Kristi Gomez hit .455 for the match and totaled 11 kills, nine digs and five service aces and Mayah Ngundam also had 11 kills.

The Hornets (9-4, 5-3 MEAC) wrapped up the No. 2 seed out of the MEAC Northern Division with the win and clinched their first MEAC Volleyball Championship Tournament berth since 2010, when they advanced to the title match. Morgan State (4-6, 3-5 MEAC) suffered its season-long third consecutive loss, while falling to 1-5 on the road this season.

Jada Bivins totaled a match-high 32 assists to go with six digs and four kills to lead Morgan State. Tylar Roberson had 14 kills and seven digs, while Jourdan Page fell shy of a double-double with nine kills and nine digs.

Morgan State claimed the opening set 25-21, despite collecting just seven kills and hitting for .054 for the set. The Hornets had 15 kills, but helped Morgan State out by committing 11 attack errors and as a result hit for .095.

The Lady Bears appeared to be heading to a 2-0 lead, following a kill by Roberson to give the guests a 23-21 lead. On the ensuing play after a Delaware State timeout, Roberson went cross court with her attack, but a diving one handed dig by Gomez turned into a kill for the Hornets as it went over the net and landed on Morgan State's side of the court for a point. The momentum seemed to have shifted, as the Hornets scored three straight and reclaimed the lead, 24-23. A kill by Perry evened the score at 24 all and the two traded the next two points and remained tied at 25 apiece, before Delaware State scored the next two points to take the set 27-25 and even the match at 1-1.

The Set 2 loss appeared to have deflated the Lady Bears and energized Delaware State. The Hornets came out after the intermission and built leads midway through the third and fourth sets that they would never relinquish en route to back-to-back 25-16 victories to close out the match.

Delaware State hit .277 for the match with 62 kills and 24 attack errors on 137 attempts. The Hornets recorded 20 more kills on one less attempt than Morgan State, which finished with 42 kills on 138 attempts for .130 hitting percentage. Both squads committed 24 attack errors.

The host Hornets also finished with 15 more digs (60-45) and out blocked the Lady Bears 11.0-6.0. Ngundam led Delaware State with a match-high six blocks, including two solo. Adriana Rodriguez had four assisted blocks and Sydney Lewis and Otero each finished with three assisted blocks.

Shadae Debraux led Morgan State with three total blocks, including two solo and Jasmin Perry added three assisted blocks.

The two teams will conclude their back-to-back home-and-home series on Friday, March 26 at 6 p.m. at Hill Field House. The contest will serve as Senior Night for Morgan State, as five Lady Bears (Shadae Debraux, Tylar Roberson, Mykaela Ross, Jennevy Santos and Triniti Smith), will be playing in their final home contest at Hill Field House. They will be honored prior to the match.
