BALTIMORE, Md. (March 22, 2021)-The Morgan State volleyball team dropped a four-set Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division contest to rival Coppin State on Monday evening at the Physical Education Complex Arena, falling 3-1 (25-15, 25-18, 14-25, 26-24).

Coppin State (9-4, 8-1 MEAC) extended its winning streak to eight straight and clinched the northern division title with the victory. The Lady Bears (4-5, 3-4 MEAC) lost their second consecutive match and dropped to third-place in the league standings behind Delaware State, following the Hornets' victory over Howard on Monday.

Three Lady Bears recorded double-doubles on the evening. Senior
Tylar Roberson, who hit .378 for the match, led the way with a team- and season-high 19 kills and added 12 digs to collect her fourth double-double of the season. Junior
Jada Bivins totaled a season-high 43 assists and a season-high 14 digs and freshman
Jourdan Page finished with 11 kills and 11 digs, both season highs. Senior
Jennevy Santos tallied 18 digs and added seven assists. Junior
Jasmin Perry, who was coming off an injury, made her season debut and totaled eight kills, while hitting for a match-high .429.

Set 1
The Eagles broke a 7-7 tie with six straight points to take a 13-7 lead over Morgan. The Lady Bears would get no closer than four points on two occasions, the last being at 15-11. Coppin used a 4-0 run, followed by a 3-1 run to extend its advantage to 22-12. The two traded points the rest of the way, giving the Eagles a 25-15 victory.

Set 2
Trailing 20-16, Morgan State got within two points at 20-18. However, Coppin State closed the door on the Lady Bears possibly getting back into the set, by scoring the final five points for the 25-18 victory to take a 2-0 lead. The Eagles finished with 16 kills and hit .200 in the set. Morgan State hit .120 with 12 kills.

Set 3
The Lady Bears hit for a set-best .655, while recording 19 kills on 29 attempts and no errors. Coppin State hit .301 with 11 kills on 29 attempts and two errors. Morgan State built an early 5-3 lead and for the most part cruised to victory from there. Coppin State did get within a point at 9-8, but the visitors put together four straight points in part of a 7-3 spurt to take a 16-11 lead. Morgan State later scored six unanswered to extend its cushion to 23-13 and went on to win 25-14.

Set 4
Morgan and Coppin traded blows back-and-forth through the midway point of the set. With the score tied at 12 all, the host Eagles scored the next six points to take an 18-12 advantage. Morgan State then countered with six straight of its own, capped off by a service ace from Roberson to even the score at 18-18. Coppin built a 23-20 lead, but the Lady Bears would not go away. Morgan State used a mini 3-0 run to tie the score at 23 all on a kill by Roberson. Roberson recorded another kill to even the score at 24, but the hosts scored the next two points to secure the win and the division title.

Coppin State was led by Miajavon Coleman, who collected a double-double with a season-best 21 kills and 14 digs. Coleman hit .321 for the contest and is now nine kills shy of reaching the 1,000-kills plateau.
Morgan State will travel to Dover, Del. to face Delaware State in a MEAC match on Thursday, March 25 at 6 p.m. at Memorial Hall. The Hornets swept the first meeting (3/15) in Dover, Del. and currently hold the second and final spot in the division standings in order to advance to the upcoming MEAC Tournament Championship April 2-3 in Norfolk, Va.
