Lady Bears Suffer First Home Loss Of Season; Fall to Coppin State, 3-1

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 11, 2021) --The Morgan State volleyball team had its seven-match home winning streak come to an end on Thursday evening, as rival Coppin State defeated the Lady Bears, 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 26-28, 25-22) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest at Hill Field House.
 
The Lady Bears, who were riding a three-match winning streak, also suffered their first league loss, as they fell to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the MEAC. Coppin State (6-4, 5-1 MEAC) extended its season-long winning streak to five straight with the win.
 
Coppin State was led by Miajavon Coleman, who had a match-high 19 kills and added 11 digs to record a double-double. Paola Caten also had a double-double, finishing with 12 kills and 18 digs. Ashley Roman led the Eagles with a match-high 20 digs, while Kareemah Hopkins nearly totaled a double-douuble, collecting a match-best 52 assists and had nine digs. Chudear Tut added 12 kills for the Eagles, who totaled 63 for the evening and hit .268 for the match.
 
Tylar Roberson of Morgan State recorded a double-double with a team-high 13 kills and 15 digs. Jada Bivins, who hit for a match-high .647, tallied her first double-double of the season, finishing with 11 kills and 35 assists. Bivins added eight digs, falling two digs short of a triple-double. Jennevy Santos tied Roberson for team high honors with 15 digs and Alyssa Sampson finished with 10.
 
Morgan State finished the match with 50 kills and hit .191 for the match.
 
The visiting Eagles reach double figures in kills in all four sets, including a set best, 17 in the fourth and final set. Coppin State also recorded 16 kills and had an attack percentage of .480 in the second set, as the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead, following a 25-20 victory.
 
Morgan State was held to just nine kills and hit .120 in the Set 2 loss. The Lady Bears best outing came in the third set, where Morgan State totaled 20 kills, while hitting .341 in the set. The Lady Bears led by as much as six (9-3), but the guests later responded with four straight to pull within a point at 10-9.
 
The Lady Bears broke a 19 all tie with two straight points on back-to-back kills by Roberson and Mykaela Ross to take a 21-19 advantage. The Eagles countered with three consecutive points to take their first lead of the set at 22-21. Following a kill by Ross to even the score at 22 apiece, the two teams traded the next eight points to remain tied at 26 all. Ross recorded a kill to put the Lady Bears ahead at 27-26 and Jourdan Page ended the set with a service ace to give Morgan the 28-26 victory.
 
Match 2 of the series was to shift to Coppin State's Physical Education Complex on Friday, March 12, but has been postponed.
