Christon, Kingsby lead Grambling State to 74-59 win over Morgan

PHOENIX, Ariz. (November 28, 2021) – Cameron Christon scored a game-high 24 points to lead Grambling State to a 74-59 victory against Morgan State in the inaugural Boost Mobile Chris Paul HBCU Challenge at the Footprint Center.
 
Danye Kingsby scored 20 points (7-13 FG) and AJ Taylor added 16 points and nine rebounds to help the Tigers improve to a 2-4 record for the season.
 
Lagio Grantsaan scored 14 points (5-9 FG) with six rebounds and Malik Miller added a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to lead Morgan State (2-5). Keith McGee and De'Torrion Ware chipped in eight points each.
 
Grambling got off to a fast start and led 10-3 following a 3-pointer by Kingsby at the 14:09 mark of the first half. The Bears responded with a pair of threes by Isaiah Burke and Keith McGee to help stem the Tigers' momentum. Grantsaan split a pair of free throws to knot the game at 16-16 with 9 minutes remaining in the half. 
 
Christon buried a corner three to help ignite an 11-2 run by the Tigers. A turnover by Burke led to a fastbreak layup by Tra'michael Moton to give Grambling a 27-18 lead.
 
The lead ballooned to 35-20 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Christon and a shotclock buzzer beating 3-pointer by Kingsby to put the Tigers up 38-22. The Tigers connected on five consecutive 3-pointers during a 5-minute stretch. 
 
Christon finished with 17 points in the first 20 minutes to give the Tigers a commanding 44-24 lead into the break.  
 
The Tigers shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, including a blistering 7 for 13 from 3-point territory. 
 
Christon went to the bench having picked up his third foul two minutes into the second half, but the Bears were unable to chip into the deficit. 
 
Chad Venning scored on a putback to cut the Tigers' lead to 56-40 (12:25) but the Bears would get no closer. 
 
Christon returned to the floor at the 11:38 mark and made an immediate impact. He scored on a layup, a dunk, and converted a 3-point play as part of a 9-2 run to extend the lead to  65-42. 

Grambling led by as many as 24 points in the second half.
 
The Tigers scored 22 points off of 20 turnovers by the Bears.
 
Morgan struggled to hit baskets as they were held to just 34 percent shooting (21-61) and was 4 for 19 from 3-point territory. Meanwhile, the Tigers finished the game by shooting 50 percent (28-56) and 44 percent (8-18) from deep.
 
The Bears got to the free throw line, but only shot 52 percent (13-25).

Next Up: Morgan plays against the Hampton Pirates on Monday (Nov. 29) as part of the Boost Mobile Chris Paul HBCU Challenge. The game will be nationally televised on ESPNU at 8:30 p.m.
