Morgan State drops Hampton in HBCU Challenge in Phoenix

Malik Miller leads Bears with a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds).

PHOENIX, Ariz. (November 29, 2021) – Malik Miller recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Morgan State to a 60-47 victory against Hampton in Monday night's finale of the HBCU Challenge Hosted by Chris Paul.

The Bears (3-5), who lost to Grambling State the previous night, snapped a 5-game losing streak and defeated the Pirates for the first time since Feb. 25, 2017.

Seventh Woods came off the bench to score 12 points, hitting 4 of 5 shots from the floor, in the ESPNU-televised game. Lagio Grantsaan added 10 points and six rebounds.

Najee Garvin led Hampton with a game-high 17 points.  The Big South's Pirates (2-6) lost to Norfolk State during the night of the HBCU Challenge. Russell "Deuce" Dean was 10 of 17 on free throws and had 14 points, though he sank just 2 of 11 field-goal attempts.

Both teams struggled to make baskets from 3-point range, with the Bears making 1 of 17 and the Pirates 3 of 18.

Garvin was 5 of 14 from the field but 7 of 9 from the free-throw line, where the Pirates hit 20 of 35.

Morgan led 10-3 during the early going and played with pace and forced the Pirates into committing several turnovers and tough shots. Hampton's Pinky Wiley hit a corner three to break a 7 minute scoring drought and the Pirates ended up pulling  even at 20 and 23. Seventh Woods scored on a backdoor layup, followed by a pair of free throws to give the Bears a 27-23 lead at halftime.

Morgan expanded the lead early in the second half. Miller fed Collin Nnamene for a dunk to go up 38-29 with 12:09 left.  A pick-and-pop by Grantsaan gave the Bears a 42-29 lead – part of a 13-3 run over a 6-minute stretch. The Bears would go on to lead by double digits for the final eight minutes.

Morgan will return to the hardwood on Monday (Dec. 6) when they host Millersville University. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at Hill Field House.
