Saint Francis rallies past Morgan State 27-14

BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 2, 2021) – Morgan State entered the second half tied 7-7 before Saint Francis scored 17 unanswered points in the third quarter as they rallied to a 27-14 victory on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Hughes Stadium.  
 
Lovell Armstead had 116 yards rushing and ran for a 3-yard score with 3:33 left in the third quarter to give the Red Flash (2-3) a 24 -7 lead.
 
Alex Schmoke increased the lead to 27-7 when he connected on a 23-yard field goal that capped a 15-play, 84 yard drive. It marked his second field goal of the day. He hit a career-long 47-yard field goal in the third quarter that gave the Red Flash their second lead of the game.
 
Morgan (0-4) got back on the scoreboard with 3:40 remaining when Neil Boudreau connected with Wesley Wolfolk (2 rec., 49 yds) for a 19-yard touchdown pass to help cut the lead to 27-14. However, the Red Flash hung on to the 13-point lead to seal their victory.
 
Saint Francis out-gained the Bears, 396-380, in the game, including a 230-yard effort on the ground.  Justin Sliwoski completed 13-of-20 attempts for 166 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 45-yard run that helped setup Armstead's touchdown in the third quarter.
 
Boudreau finished 16-of-31 for a season-high 206 yards and a touchdown with two of those completions going to junior wideout Devon Mondy for 52 yards.  Juniors Marcus Thomas (34 yds) and Alfonzo Graham (26 yds) had three catches apiece.
 
Morgan's rushing attack finished with 174 yards — 106 coming from sophomore Jabriel Johnson on 12 attempts.
 
Freshman Carlvainsky Decius had a team-high nine tackles, sophomores Lawrence Richardson and Christian Teague had seven tackles each. 
 
It was a back-and-forth affair throughout most of the first half until Saint Francis engineered an 11-play, 70-yard drive in the second quarter. On the drive, the Red Flash converted a fourth-and-one two plays before Summers scored on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Sliwoski. The score gave Saint Francis a 7-0 lead midway through the second quarter.  
 
Morgan State responded with a 13-play, 82-yard yard drive that was capped off by a Romello Kimbrough two-yard touchdown that tied the game 7-7. 
 
UP NEXT
The Bears will have a quick turnaround when they open conference play at Howard on Friday, Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. in Washington, D.C. The game will be televised by ESPNU.
 
NOTES
● K.C. Akubuo had a 46-yard field goal attempt blocked by Ray Crittenden with 8:06 remaining in the third quarter. On the ensuing Red Flash drive, Sliwoski's 45-yard run to the two-yard line set up a Tate Myers three-yard touchdown reception and gave Saint Francis a 17-7 lead.

● Jabriel Johnson's season-high 106 rushing yards is the most by a Bear since Josh Chase ran for 145 yards versus Delaware State on Oct. 12, 2019.
