Coppin State Wins Round One Of Volleyball Version Of East Vs. West

BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 1, 2021)-Paola Caten had a team-high 12 kills and Miajavon Coleman added nine, as visiting Coppin State spoiled the Lady Bears' Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) home opener with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 27-25) victory on Friday evening at Hill Field House.
 
Andrea Tsvetanova finished with a match-best 34 assists and Ashley Roman tallied a match-high 14 digs, as Coppin State (8-7, 2-1 MEAC) won its fourth straight over Morgan State. The Lady Bears now lead the all-time series, 65-16.
 
Morgan State (3-14, 1-2 MEAC) was led by the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week selection Madison Grace, who totaled a match-high 17 kills and hit for a team-best .351 for the match. Makila Billingsley and Gabriela Hiciano each added eight kills. Trinity Carruthers finished with 33 assists and Alyssa Sampson collected 11 digs.
 
Coppin State finished the contest with 39 kills and hit for .180 as a team. The Eagles had a set-best 15 kills and hit for a set-high .205 in the opening frame.
 
Morgan State hit .160 as a team and finished with 37 kills. The Lady Bears hit for a set-best .290 in the second set and tallied a set-high 14 kills in the third, but committed 11 attack errors.
 
The Lady Bears were done in by their serving. Morgan State had just one service ace and committed nine service errors. Coppin State finished with five aces and had five service errors.
 
MSU finished the contest with two more assists (37) and six more digs (44) than Coppin State. Morgan State also held a 6.0-3.0 blocking advantage over the Eagles. Kendal Hoges led the way with three total blocks, including two solos. Jasmin Perry also added three assisted blocks.
 
Morgan State will be off until next Friday, Oct. 8, when it hosts Beltway rival Howard. First serve is at 6 p.m. at Hill Field House. The Lady Bison (5-10, 2-1 MEAC) defeated visiting Norfolk State, 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-14) on Friday in Washington, D.C.
