Volleyball Sweeps George Washington In Home Opener; Earns First-Ever Win

BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 29, 2021)-Looking to bounce back from a hard fought five-set loss a week ago to Temple in the season opener, the Lady Bears welcomed visiting George Washington on Friday evening for their home opener at Hill Field House.
 
Freshman Gabriela Hiciano collected her first collegiate double-double, finishing with a season-high 11 kills and a match-high 11 digs to help the host Lady Bears to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-22) non-conference sweep of GW. The win was Morgan State's first-ever over the Colonials in eight meetings.
 
Junior Jada Bivins tallied 31 assists and added nine digs and four kills for the Lady Bears, who have won five straight at home dating back to the 2019 season. Senior Mykaela Ross recorded eight kills, while hitting .438 for the match and fellow senior Shadae Debraux had a match-high .455 hitting percentage and finished with seven kills. As a team, Morgan State (1-1) hit .178 for the evening, totaling 36 kills on 107 attack attempts and had 17 errors. Defensively, the Lady Bears finished with 52 digs, as seniors Tylar Roberson and Jennevy Santos joined Hiciano with a match-high 11 digs.
 
George Washington (0-1) finished with 40 kills and had a hitting percentage of .138 with 23 errors on 123 attempts. Ashley Waggle tallied a match-high 14 kills to hit a team-high .333 for the match. Paz Dozie-Nnamah had a double-double of 10 kills and 11 digs. Bella Bowman and Sydney Welch recorded 11 and 10 digs, respectively. Heather Merryman finished the contest with a match-high 37 assists.
 
The Colonials held a 6.0-5.0 block advantage over Morgan State. Waggle led the guests with three, including a solo block. Melanie Battle led the Lady Bears with two blocks.
 
Set 1: GW took a 14-9 lead, following three consecutive attack errors by the Lady Bears to lead to a timeout. Morgan State came out of the timeout scoring five straight points to even the score at 14 all. With the score evened at 22 apiece, the Lady Bears took a two-point lead on back-to-back errors by the guests. GW got a kill from Waggle to cut the deficit to 24-23, before a kill by Debraux ended the set and gave the hosts the 25-23 victory.
 
The Colonials recorded 14 kills for a set-best .171. Waggle led the way with a set-leading five kills and Dozie-Nnamah added four. Merryman recorded 14 of her 37 assists in the opening set.
 
Morgan State collected 12 kills and finished with a set-best .241 hitting percentage. Ross hit for a set-best .667 attack percentage, finishing with four kills. Hiciano also added four kills. The Lady Bears held a 3.0-1.0 blocking advantage. Battle and Hiciano led the way with two blocks.  
 
Set 2: The Colonials jumped out to a 7-1 lead behind five kills, a service ace and an attack error on Morgan State. The Lady Bears went on an 11-5 run to even the score at 12-12. The two teams would have four more ties, before Morgan State broke a 17-17 tie, scoring the next two points during a 6-2 spurt to go in front 23-19. GW pulled within 24-22, on an assisted block by Waggle and Markella Lanara, but had a service error on the ensuing serve to give the Lady Bears the 25-22 victory and the 2-0 set lead.
 
Debraux led the Lady Bears with five kills in the set and hit for .571. Bivins added two kills on three attempts to account for a .667 attack percentage and had nine assists.
 
Waggle and Elizabeth Drelling each had five kills for the Colonials, who recorded a set-best 15 kills.
 
Set 3: Morgan State forced a GW timeout after back-to-back kills by Roberson gave the hosts an 8-5 lead. The Lady Bears extended their advantage to 18-12 to force another timeout by the Colonials. GW regrouped and went on a 7-3 run to pull within 21-19 after a kill by Womble. Following a timeout, Morgan State scored the next three points to extend its lead to 24-19. GW scored three straight points to cut Morgan's lead to 24-22, but Ross ended the match with a kill to give Morgan State the 25-22 win and match victory.
 
Morgan State finished with a set-high 13 kills with Hiciano totaling a set-high six kills. Bivins tallied a set-best 12 assists.
 
George Washington received four kills each by Waggle and Liv Womble. The Colonials had a 3.0-1.0 blocking advantage in the set. Merryman and Callie Fauntleroy each had two blocks.
 
Next Up: Morgan State returns to action on Thursday, February 11-Friday, February 12 when it welcomes the Howard Bison to Hill Field House for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division series opener. Both matches get underway at 6 p.m.
