Morgan State Sweeps Howard in MEAC Opener

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 12, 2021)-445 days ago Morgan State's season came to an end in Washington, D.C., following a heartbreaking five-set loss to host Howard in the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) title match.
 
Facing Howard for the first time since that Nov. 24, 2019 meeting, Morgan State would earn a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-20) sweep of their Beltway rivals on Friday evening in the MEAC opener for both teams. The win would mark the second straight at home over the Lady Bison, both by way of shutouts.
 
Tylar Roberson fell short of a double-double, finishing with a match-high 17 kills and a team-high nine digs. Roberson, who hit .342 for the match, also added a match-high three service aces and had an assist, as Morgan State (2-1, 1-0 MEAC) improved to 2-0 at home this season and extended its winning streak to six straight dating back to the 2019 season.  
 
Jada Bivins tallied a match-high 29 assists, five digs, two service aces and a block. Jennevy Santos had eight digs, four assists, two service aces and a kill, while Jourdan Page finished with seven kills. Kendal Hoges, who was making her Morgan debut, hit for .455 and finished with five kills on 11 attempts with no errors, two blocks and a dig.
 
Howard (1-2, 0-1 MEAC) was led by Jennifer Bolden and Tamar Wells, who each had nine kills. Wells would hit a match-high .643 for the contest with no errors on 14 attempts, while Bolden hit .438 for the match. Amari Patterson totaled a match-high 12 digs for the Lady Bison. Kayla Diaz (match-high 17 assists) and Milexa Cardona (13 assists) shared the duties at setter.
 
Set 1
Both teams recorded 13 kills in the opening set, but the Lady Bears hit for .237, while Howard committed a set-high nine attack errors and had a hitting percentage of .114. Trailing by two points, Morgan State used a 7-1 run to take a 10-6 advantage. Howard countered with seven straight points to claim a 13-10 lead. Leading 20-19, Morgan State got a kill from Page and a service ace from Bivins to increase the lead to 22-19. The Lady Bears' final three points would come by way of three attack errors on Howard.
 
Set 2
Morgan State hit for a set-best .346, totaling 13 kills on 26 attempts with four errors. Clinging to a 10-9 lead, the Lady Bears went on a 10-3 spurt to increase their lead to 20-12.
 
Set 3
The Lady Bears, who never trailed in the third and final set, collected a set-high 15 kills to close out the guests. Morgan State took control of the set, by going on a 12-3 run, capped off by three straight kills from Page to give the hosts a 19-9 advantage.
