Sweazie Earns Second Straight MEAC Rookie of the Week Honor

NORFOLK, Va. (March 2, 2020)-Morgan State freshman shortstop Cayla Sweazie was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week, as announced by the league office on Monday. It is the third MEAC weekly honor this season for Sweazie, who last week earned both MEAC Player and Rookie of the Week honors.
 
Norfolk State's Jazzmaine Hammond was named MEAC Player of the Week and teammate Alexis Robinson was selected as MEAC Pitcher of the Week.
 
Sweazie started in two of the three games played over the weekend in the Colonial Classic, hosted by George Washington. She finished with a batting average of .500 to lead Morgan State, going 3-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
 
The Ashburn, Va. native posted a 2-for-2 performance, including a double with three RBIs and a run scored against Princeton. She finished the week, going 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored against Georgetown.
 
This weekend the Lady Bears will be at the friendly confines of Lois T. Murray Field for the first time this season for back-to-back non-conference contests against Manhattan and Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Morgan State will first meet Manhattan on Saturday at noon for its home opener, before taking on MEAC foe Maryland Eastern Shore (MDES) at 2 p.m. The Lady Bears close out the weekend on Sunday, with another noon contest against Manhattan, followed by a 2 p.m. match-up against MDES. Both contests against MDES will not count towards the league standings.
