Morgan State Hands Bulldogs a 78-72 Setback

Earn a season sweep over S.C. State with the win.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (February 17, 2020) – It was a back and forth battle throughout Monday evening at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center, but the Morgan State men's basketball team shot 55 percent in the second half to defeat South Carolina State 78-72.

Morgan State, which earned a season sweep over the Bulldogs with the win, now stand at 14-14 overall and 8-5 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.
 
The Bears had five players scoring in double-figures. Sophomore Malik Miller led the way with 14 points (6-12 FG) and six rebounds. Juniors David Syfax and Lagio Grantsaan scored 13 points apiece, and senior Stanley Davis and sophomore Sherwyn Devonish-Prince added 12 each. 
 
Tariq Simmons and Rayshawn Neal led all players with 17 points each. Damani Applewhite finished with 10 points and pulled down a game-high nine boards, to go along with three blocks. Ian Kinard also chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds as South Carolina State dropped to 11-13 overall (6-6 MEAC).

Morgan State made 13-of-30 from the floor (43.3 percent) and shot a blistering 55.2 percent in the second, outscoring the Bulldogs by 10 (46-36) in the second half.

SCSU led 36-32 at the break after a see-saw first half. Morgan State held its largest lead of the half after a dunk by David Syfax put the Bears ahead 18-12 (10:58). The host Bulldogs regained the lead heading into the intermission after a first half that had 8 ties and 10 lead changes.

Applewhite scored the first three points after the break to increase the Bulldogs lead to 39-32 (19:35) for its largest lead of the night.

Miller scored on a layup at the 19:19 mark that helped jump-start the Bears offense. MSU would go on to outscore the Bulldogs by a 17-9 margin and a layup by Devonish gave the Bears its first lead of the half at 49-48 with 14:06 remaining.

The lead changed hands four more times over a four minute span before Miller scored on a tip-in with 6:12 remaining to put the Bears ahead for good at 60-58. 

MSU's lead increased to as many as 8 points (73-65) down the stretch, however the Bulldogs stayed within striking distance.  Ian Kinard buried a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left to cut the Bears lead to 74-70, however Devonish and Grantsaan stepped up and made big free throws to help the Bears pull away in the end.
