Devonish-Prince Hits Game-winner in Wild Finish; Bears Beat Coppin State

BALTIMORE, Md. (January 25, 2020) – Stanley Davis scored a game-high 13 points with 10 rebounds and Sherwyn Devonish-Prince added 11 points including the game-winning basket, as Morgan State rallied from behind to defeat crosstown rival Coppin State, 50-48 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) showdown at the Physical Education Complex.

David Syfax grabbed nine rebounds and added seven points, while Troy Baxter chipped in seven points in the win for Morgan State (10-12, 4-3 MEAC), which posted its first win against Coppin State since Feb. 26, 2018.

"This was just another game on our schedule," said MSU head coach Kevin Broadus. "It happened to be against a cross-town rival."

"It was what I expected, but now that we got the win it was even better."

The Bears improved to 33-60 all-time against the Eagles, who fell to 5-16 overall and 1-5 in the MEAC.

Andrew Robinson scored 12 points and had seven rebounds to lead the Eagles. Dejuan Clayton added nine points and Brendon Medley-Bacon finished with a game-high 24 rebounds to go along with eight points and three blocks.

Trailing by 10 at halftime, the Bears began closing the gap. Jamar Brown scored on a dunk and Devonish hit a three to pull the Bears within 28-23.

Malik Miller split a pair of free throws to give the Bears its first lead of the game at 38-37 with 10 minutes left to go.

A series of empty possession by both teams left the game tight.

Stanley Davis tied the game at 42, but the Eagles responded with a putback by Koby Thomas to give the Eagles a 44-42 lead with just under 4 minutes to go.

The Bears regained the lead when Lagio Grantsaan passed the ball to Davis for a corner 3-pointer.  Medley-Bacon responded with a basket in the paint to trim the Bears lead to 47-46 with just over a minute left.

The Bears committed a turnover and ended up sending Dejuan Clayton to the free throw line after he was fouled by Malik Miller. Clayton hit both free throws to give the Eagles a 47-46 lead with 23 seconds to go.

Morgan State answered in the waning seconds when David Syfax penetrated into the paint and kicked it out to Devonish-Prince who nailed a step-back 3-pointer with 4 seconds on the clock. The Eagles inbounded the ball to Clayton who raced to near half court and launched what fans thought was a game-winner. However, the shot came after the horn had already sounded. Game over.

Morgan State outscored the Eagles 32-20 in the second half and finished the ballgame shooting 19 for 65 (29%) compared to Coppin's 18 for 66 (27%).

The Eagles controlled the glass during the early going behind the play of 7-foot-1 center Brendan Medley-Bacon. Aaron Robinson hit a 3-pointer from the corner and a jumper by Thomas to give the Eagles an early 13-2 lead.

Coach Broadus addressed his team's slow start.

"They [the team] mirror me, so I have to stay calm. I always tell them to match my intensity."

The Eagles extended its lead to 18-7 following a driving layup by Reggie James.

A basket inside the paint by David Syfax was part of a 7-0 run by the Bears to cut the lead to 26-16. The Bears went into the halftime trailing 28-18.

"The first half doesn't mean anything," said Broadus. "It's a 40 minute game. I always tell my guys that. We just persevered through the whole thing and came out victorious."

Coppin State controlled the glass and won the 50-50 balls throughout the first half and finished the game by outrebounding the Bears by a 57-46 margin.

The Bears return to action on Monday, Jan. 27 when they travel to Princess Anne, Md. to face the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. at the Hytche Athletic Center.
