Bears Top Maryland Eastern Shore on the Road, 56-50

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (January 27, 2020) – David Syfax had 11 points and five rebounds off the bench and Malik Miller came up just shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds to help the Bears rally past Maryland Eastern Shore 56-50 for the Bears' second straight victory. 
 
Eastern Shore has lost five in a row.
 
Troy Baxter added four blocked shots, four rebounds and two assists for Morgan State (11-12, 5-3 MEAC), which overcame a 14-point deficit in the first half.
 
Freshman Baltimore product Da'Shawn Phillip (Dunbar HS) led all scorers with 14 points on 6 for 8 shooting with three steals, two assists and a pair of blocks for Eastern Shore (2-19, 1-5 MEAC). Walter Prevost had eight points, while Bryan Urrutia added eight rebounds and five points.
 
The Bears were down 23-15 at halftime before extending their defense and forcing turnovers in the second half.
 
The Bears were down 25-15 after Phillip scored on a jumper to open the second half scoring. Morgan State responded with an 11-0 run over the next four-plus minutes to take the momentum. 
 
Malik Miller scored on a putback to trim the Hawks' lead to 25-19 with 17:50 left – it marked the Bears first 2-point basket of the game. David Syfax completed a 3-point play to give the Bears its first lead of the night at 26-25 with 15:26 left. 
 
The Hawks found themselves in a 5 minute drought – starting the second half connecting on just 1 for 6 field goals.
 
Bryan Arrutia ended the drought when he converted a 3-point play to retake the lead at 27-26.
 
The teams exchanged leads down the stretch before the Bears went up 45-37 with 5:46 to go on consecutive 3-pointers by Isaiah Burke. Marlon Adams' 3-pointer and a layup by Ty Gibson got the Hawks within 45-43 with 3:21 left, but Morgan State's Troy Baxter scored on a putback dunk to give the Bears a 47-43 edge with under 3 minutes left to go.
 
The remaining seconds of the game got tight as a pair of Bear turnovers helped the Hawks cut the lead to 52-50 with 25 seconds left, but the Bears sank four of four free throws in the final seconds to seal it.
 
Morgan State fell behind 14-2 to start the ballgame as the Hawks were paced by Da'Shawn Phillip (Dunbar HS).
 
The Bears started off the game shooting 0 for 7 from the field over the course of the first eight minutes and just seemed a bit out of sync.
 
Morgan State went 12 minutes before Sherwyn Devonish-Prince hit a 3-pointer for the Bears first basket of the night to cut the Hawks lead to 16-5. Lagio Grantsaan hit a perimeter 3 to trim the lead to 18-8.
 
The Hawks shooting started cooling off midway through the first half and went into the break with a 23-15 lead.
 
The Bears were limited to just 4 of 29 shooting in the first half – all four shots made were 3-pointers. 

Next Up: Morgan State will continue MEAC play Saturday (Feb. 1) when they take on the Howard Bison. Tip- off is set for 4 p.m.
