Rawal, Gupta Shine at Joe Hunt Navy Invitational

BALTIMORE, Md. (Sept. 29, 2019) -- Morgan State senior standouts Nihit Rawal and Shrey Gupta received wild card entries into the Joe Hunt Navy Invitational this past weekend in Annapolis, Md., and they made great use of the entries. 

Morgan State was one of 13 teams competing over the weekend with notable opponents including A-10 foes St. Bonaventure, Richmond and George Mason. Local foes Navy, Georgetown and Coppin State also participated.


Rawal was placed in the Red Flight and won his Round Robin going 3-0 defeating George Mason' s Jakob Nielsen, who played #2 last season in the first match. He then proceeded to defeat the University of Richmond's Ricky Bell in 3 sets.

For Rawal's third match, he defeated Navy's Jake Fishkin by a score of 6-4, 6-3. In the finals of the Red Bracket, Rawal lost a tough 7-5, 6-4 match to Temple's Louis Gorregeus to finish 3-1. He is currently 13-2 in singles action this Fall.

Shrey Gupta won his Round Robin in the Purple Flight going 3-0. Gupta defeated Georgetown's Ian Whitmer 6-2, 6-4, and then went on to have a big 3 set win over George Mason's Faisal Alrebdi.

On Saturday, Gupta made quick work of Bentley Goodwin from Christopher Newport 6-1, 6-0. In the finals of the Purple Bracket, Gupta fell to Navy's Romesh Kahatapitiya 6-3, 6-2. He finished the tournament 3-1 in singles play and has a 10-2 overall record this Fall.

The duo of Rawal and Gupta shined in doubles play going 3-1 on the weekend. They defeated Georgetown's Yang/Lee 6-1. On Saturday they defeated Christopher Newport's Bentely/Lacombe, after falling to FDU's Cabral/Dhouib 6-3. They advanced to the final's of the White Round Robin grouping based on a tiebreaker and defeated St. Bonaventure's Ritolo/Rutowski by a score of 6-4. 

Rawal and Gupta hold an 11-1 doubles record this Fall.
