BALTIMORE, Md. (July 1, 2019)-Morgan State head volleyball coach Ramona Riley-Bozier has announced the Lady Bears' 2019 schedule.
The schedule will feature 18 non-conference matchups, including four regular season tournaments, one of which Morgan State will co-host along with Towson, with the entire tournament being played at Hill Field House. Â
An addition to this season's schedule will be meetings against all five members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division. It will mark the first time since 2006, when the league last held its annual MEAC Round-Up, that the two divisions will all play each other. However, those cross divisional contests will not count toward the league standings.
The schedule will conclude with a 10-match MEAC Northern Division slate. The MEAC Championship will take place Nov. 22-24 in Washington, D.C. at Burr Gymnasium on the campus of Howard University.
In addition to playing the entire MEAC Southern Division for the first time in 13 years, the Lady Bears will also have several other opponents on the schedule they have not met in a range of three to 13 years, as well as four first-time opponents.
The Lady Bears will conclude their preseason camp this year with their annual "Orange & Blue" Scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 18 when the 2019 Lady Bears take on the MSU Alumni team at Hill Field House.Â
Morgan State, which will play in front of the friendly confines of Hill Field House 12 times, will officially kick off the 2019 campaign at home for the first time in 15 years, when it plays host to Seton Hall on Friday, August 30 in the opener of the Morgan/Towson Invitational (Aug. 30-31). The Lady Bears will conclude Day 1 against William & Mary, before facing crosstown rival Towson in the finale on Saturday night. Seton Hall and Morgan State last met during the 2012 season, while the Lady Bears last faced William & Mary in 2000 and will meet Towson for the first time since 2012.
After playing host to Siena (Sept. 3) - in the first meeting since 1995, the Lady Bears will take to the road for the next three weekends. Morgan State will travel to Hackensack, N.J. for its first road trip of the season, as they take part in the FDU Invitational (Sept. 6-7). The Lady Bears will take on host Fairleigh Dickinson on the opening day and will close out the tournament on Day 2 against New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and Quinnipiac. Morgan State and FDU last met in 2014, while the Lady Bears last met both NJIT and Quinnipiac in 2016. Â
Next up will be a trip out west for the program's first-ever visit to Portland, Oregon to compete in the Portland State Tournament (Sept. 13-14). The Lady Bears will take on host Portland State, followed by Cal State Northridge on the opening day, before closing out the tournament against Nevada on Day 2. Morgan State will be meeting all three opponents for the first time.Â
Morgan State closes out the regular season tournament schedule when it travels to the Nation's Capital to take part in a tournament hosted by Georgetown (Sept. 20-21). The Lady Bears will face the host Hoyas in the opener for the second consecutive year, followed by a contest against Florida International (FIU) later in the day, before taking on Binghamton on Day 2. The Lady Bears and FIU last met in 1995, while MSU and Binghamton last squared off in 2009.
The MEAC slate kicks off at home when the Lady Bears host Maryland Eastern Shore (Sept. 27) and Delaware State (Sept. 29). Morgan State will then welcome cross division foes North Carolina Central (Oct. 4) to Hill Field House for the first time since 2007, before hosting North Carolina A&T State (Oct. 6).
MSU will take to the road for the first time in MEAC play when it travels back to the Nation's Capital, this time to square off against four-time defending MEAC champion, Howard (Oct. 8) in Washington, D.C.
The annual Homecoming Alumni Match is scheduled for Oct. 13 and will stand on its own for the second straight season. The Lady Bears were originally scheduled to be on the road that day at Norfolk State. The match against the Spartans will now be played on Monday, Oct. 14 in Norfolk, Va.
Morgan State will then travel to the Sunshine State for two contests against cross division opponents. The Lady Bears will first head to Daytona Beach, Fla. to visit Bethune-Cookman (Oct. 18), before traveling to Tallahassee, Fla. to face Florida A&M (Oct. 20). The FAMU match will be the first regular season meeting between the two teams since 2006. The trip will mark the first time Morgan State will visit the two Florida schools on their home floors since the 2002 season.
The Lady Bears will return home for a four-match homestand when they first welcome South Carolina State (Oct. 25). The contest will be the Lady Bears' final cross divisional match.
Morgan State will entertain crosstown rival Coppin State (Oct. 29), before squaring off against Howard (Nov. 1) and concluding its home schedule against Norfolk State (Nov. 3) for Senior Day. It will be the final home match for seniors Jasmin Hubbard and Roi Wallace.Â
