BALTIMORE, Md. (April 5, 2019)-Fresh off their 13-6 non-conference thumping of rival Towson in 11 innings on Wednesday, the Morgan State softball team returns home and back to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) action when it welcomes the Delaware State Hornets to town for MEAC Northern Division play. The three-game series gets underway at Lois T. Murray Field with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 6 starting at 1 p.m., and wraps up on Sunday with a single game beginning at noon.
Prior to Saturday's first pitch, senior outfielder Damali Young will be honored for becoming the school's all-time stolen bases leader. Young, who currently has 116 career stolen bases, broke the record last season at Hampton (3/17/18). She led off the second game of a doubleheader against the Lady Pirates with a single to right field in the first inning and then stole second to become Morgan State's all-time leader in stolen bases with 79.
Sunday's contest will mark 'Senior Day' as the team's seniors will be honored with a special ceremony prior to the start of the game.
Morgan State (10-21, 1-2 MEAC) is riding a two-game winning streak, following a 10-4 Game 2 victory over Cornell and the Towson win. The second game of the Towson series was cancelled due to the 3-hour 27-minute marathon.
This will be the Lady Bears' second MEAC series of the season. Morgan State dropped its MEAC series opener, also at home, to Norfolk State (), which took two of three games. It was the first time since last season's MEAC series opener at Hampton (3/17-18, 2018), that Morgan State had lost a MEAC series, thus ending a streak of five consecutive MEAC series victories where the Lady Bears would go 14-1 during that stretch.
Delaware State (6-20, 3-3 MEAC), losers of four of its last five games, is coming off a non-conference doubleheader loss to George Washington on Wednesday in Washington, D.C. The host Colonials would take the first game 6-5 in eight innings, before winning the second game by a score of 6-2. Prior to the GW series, Delaware State won two of three games in its MEAC season-opening series against Coppin State, before dropping two of three on the road at Howard.
The Hornets enter the weekend sitting in third-place in the MEAC Northern Division, while Morgan State is tied for fourth with Coppin State.Â
Last season Morgan State not only swept the series against Delaware State, but they shut the Hornets out by a combined score of 20-0 in the three games at Lois T. Murray Field, including an 11-0 win in five innings in the opener. Morgan State has won four straight and five of the last six meetings against the Hornets.
