BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 7, 2019)-The Morgan State Lady Bears will look to continue the second half of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) slate on a high note when they visit the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
BEAR CLAWS: Morgan State (7-16, 5-4 MEAC), in the midst of a two-game winning streak, began the second half of the MEAC schedule with a 74-57 road victory over crosstown rival Coppin State (2/2).
Adre'onia Coleman scored a team-high 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while
Jihayah Chavis scored 17 points and
Kayla Horn added 11. Coleman leads the team in scoring with 16.8 points and has recorded a team-high 8.2 rebounds per game.
Ashia McCalla is averaging 9.5 points and Chavis has contributed 8.8 rebounds per game. The Lady Bears are averaging 54.1 points, while allowing 64.6 points per game.
DOG BISCUITS: South Carolina State (11-11, 4-4 MEAC) begins the second half of the MEAC season looking to improve in the conference standings. The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Dover, Del. on Monday, Feb. 4, where they came away with a 63-60 victory. Taylor Brown led S.C. State to the three-point victory with her team-high 24 points, while adding a game-high 13 rebounds. Rhein Beamon contributed 14 points and Jakayvea Akins finished with 13. Jaquanna Murray grabbed 10 boards in the win. Brown has paced the Lady Bulldogs with 14.3 points per game and 9.1 rebounds per contest. Beamon is averaging 10.6 points and Jenkins is also scoring in double figures with 10.0 points per game.
MORGAN VS. S.C. STATE SERIES NOTES: South Carolina State leads the all-time series, 40-37. The Lady Bears won this season's first meeting, 62-51 in Baltimore (1/12).
NEXT UP: The Lady Bears will travel to Savannah, Ga. to face the Lady Tigers of Savannah State on Monday, Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Tiger Arena. It will be the final regular season meeting between the two teams as members of the MEAC. Savannah State will leave the conference and move back to Division II at the end of the 2018-19 academic year.
COLEMAN EARNS COLLEGE SPORTS MADNESS HONOR: Adre'onia Coleman was named Madness Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday, Feb. 4 by the staff of
College Sports Madness. She also earned the honor on Jan. 14. Coleman averaged a double-double of 22 points and 10.5 rebounds to lead Morgan State to a 2-0 week. Coleman began the week recording her eighth double-double of the season, finishing with a game-high 24 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds in an overtime victory over Florida A&M (1/28). She closed out the week scoring a team-high 20 points, pulling down a team-best eight rebounds and had an assist and a steal in the win at Coppin State (2/2).
HORN SETS CAREER-HIGH: Senior guard
Kayla Horn recorded a career- and game-high seven assists at Coppin State (2/2). Her seven assists are the most by a Lady Bear this season. The Romulus, Mich. native ranks second on the team in assists with 50.
LADY BEARS PICKUP BACK-TO-BACK WINS AGAIN: Morgan State recorded back-to-back wins for just the second time this season, following victories over Florida A&M (1/28) and at Coppin State (2/2). It was the first two-game winning streak for the Lady Bears since victories last month over Savannah State (1/7) and South Carolina State (1/12).
FARWELL: Morgan State and Savannah State will square off one final time during the regular season in their annual 'Orange & Blue' battle on Monday, Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Tiger Arena in Savannah, Ga. Savannah State will leave the conference and return to the Division II level at the end of the 2018-19 academic calendar. The Lady Bears' win over the Lady Tigers (1/7) marked the final meeting in Baltimore between the two programs as members of the MEAC.
COLEMAN EARNS THIRD MEAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR: Senior guard/forward
Adre'onia Coleman was named MEAC Player of the Week (1/29). It was her third MEAC weekly honor this season for Coleman, who also earned the award (11/20) and (1/8). The Baltimore native was shy of averaging a double-double for the week, scoring 19.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest, while adding 2.0 steals and 2.0 assists to help the Lady Bears to a 1-1 week. She shot a combined 17-for-39 (.436) from the floor and was 7-for-9 (.777) from the free throw line. Coleman began the week with 17 points and six rebounds against Bethune-Cookman (1/26), before totaling a game-high 24 points and pulling down 13 rebounds against Florida A&M on Monday to record her eighth double-double of the season.
MCCALLA NAMED MEAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Freshman
Ashia McCalla was named MEAC Rookie of the Week (1/29). McCalla averaged 17 points and six rebounds per game, while shooting over 50 percent from the floor, going 12-for-22 (.545). The Greenbelt, Md. native scored 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting and added six rebounds and three steals in an overtime loss to Bethune-Cookman (1/26). McCalla, who connected on 3-of-5 three-pointers against B-CU, recorded a steal at half court and knocked down an off balanced three-pointer with seven seconds left in regulation to force overtime. She then came off the bench and scored 18 points, grabbed six rebounds, two assists and two steals in an overtime win over Florida A&M (1/28).
COLEMAN RECORDS EIGHTH DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Adre'onia Coleman picked up her eighth double-double of the season in the win over Florida A&M (1/28). Coleman would score a game-high 24 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. The Baltimore native would also add three assists, three steals and a block in 45 minutes of play.
MORE TIME PLEASE: The Lady Bears had back-to-back overtime games against Bethune-Cookman (1/26) and Florida A&M (1/28). Morgan State would fall to Bethune-Cookman (73-69), before bouncing back to defeat Florida A&M (75-71). They were the first extra period games this season for Morgan State.
FAITHFUL EIGHT: With the dismissal of three players prior to the start of the season due to conduct detrimental to the team, two players sitting out due to NCAA transfer rules and a fourth player removing herself from the team after just three games, the Lady Bears have gone into battle each game with eight strong and dedicated players. Despite a tough non-conference schedule and the shortage of numbers, the Lady Bears have fought in every game and have picked up their play since the start of the MEAC schedule.
DAVIS RECORDS VICTORY No. 370: Morgan State head coach
Ed Davis Jr. recorded career coaching victory 370, following the Lady Bears' win over UMass Lowell (12/29). Davis, who is in his seventh season with the Lady Bears and third as head coach, has an overall record of 375-296. He has guided his teams to a total of four NCAA Tournament appearances, while at Bowie State (3) and Delaware State (1) and two Division II Sweet 16 appearances.
DAVIS A THREE-TIME HALL OF FAMER: Morgan State head coach
Ed Davis Jr. was inducted into his third Hall of Fame in September 2017, when his 2006-07 Delaware State women's basketball team was inducted for capturing the 2007 MEAC title. Davis was also inducted into the Bowie State University Hall of Fame in 2014 as a coach, where he guided the Lady Bulldogs to three CIAA titles and a pair of Division II "Sweet 16" appearances and in 2008 he was inducted into the West Virginia State University Hall of Fame as a basketball player.
