Men’s Tennis Falls At Navy, Bounces Back Against La Salle

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 2, 2019) –– The Morgan State men's tennis team split a pair of decisions during Saturday's doubleheader. The Bears were defeated by Navy at the Tose Family Tennis Center by the score of 5-2 and won a 4-0 decision against La Salle at Twin Lakes Racquet Club to improve to 2-4 overall record.

"We dropped a very winnable match against Navy," said MSU coach Matthew Townes. "We did a lot of good things to put us in a position to win, but we didn't capitalize on the opportunities presented to us. We have to believe in ourselves on all occasions."

Navy swept the three doubles matches from Morgan State to take a 1-0 lead.  The closest match was at the No. 2 flight where Romesh Kahatapitiya and Derrick Thompson combined for a 7-4 victory in a tiebreaker over Serhii Kharchev and Arjun Ramakrishnan.

Morgan State won just two matches during singles play. Arjun Ramakrishnan posted the first victory for the Bears when he outlasted Matthew Lee with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-0) win at the No. 5 flight. Nihit Rawal finished off the day with a competitive 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) decision against Peter Lohrbach at No. 3 singles.

Navy's Andrew Ton completed a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Serhii Kharchev at No. 1 singles to give Navy a 4-0 lead and assure the Mids of the overall victory.

Morgan State recovered and made quick work of the La Salle Explorers as they rolled to a 4-0 victory.

The Bears won the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches to earn the team doubles point. The Bears completed the sweep with three singles wins. Serhii Kharchev posted a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1, followed by a 6-0, 6-3 win by Nihit Rawal at No. 4.  Arjun Ramakrishnan recorded a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6.

"I'm glad we bounced back against La Salle," Townes said. "It was a match we really needed to win and win emphatically, and the guys did just that. We dominated from the first point of doubles until the fourth point was won. Our win streak is now at one."

The Bears will road trip next weekend against CAA foe Hofstra on Saturday, Feb. 9 in Hempstead, N.Y.
