Bears Top Longwood 73-65, Snap Losing Streak

Stanley Davis scores game-high 18 points with six rebounds.

BALTIMORE, Md. (Dec. 7, 2019) -- Senior guard Stanley Davis led four Bears in double-figures with a game-high 18 points and Morgan State ended their five-game losing streak as they defeated the Longwood Lancers 73-65 Saturday afternoon in Hill Field House.

"This is how I want this team to be looked at," said MSU head coach Kevin Broadus. "You can't zone in with just one guy. If we share the ball, everybody on this team can score and can make an impact. If it's not scoring, then it's assists or rebounds. So it's big for us."

Davis connected on 6-of-8 shooting and grabbed a team-high six rebounds along with dishing out four assists.

Morgan State improved to 4-7 overall, while Longwood fell to 4-6 and are now 0-6 on the road.

Sophomore guard Sherwyn Devonish-Prince finished with 16 points in 37 minutes for the Bears. Isaiah Burke finished with 10 points. The pair of guards combined for nine assists and 11 rebounds.

Junior forward Lagio Grantsaan chipped in 13 points (3-4 3FG) off the bench.

The Bears defense was practically impenetrable throughout the first half as they limited the Lancers to 28 percent shooting (7-25).

Longwood finished the game shooting 35 percent (19-54).

"Our defense was really good today," said Broadus. "We held them to 35 percent from the floor and we shot 52 percent. It's a beauty to watch when our defense is like that and the guys are locked in. I'm proud of the way they did it."

Even though the Lancers were just 1-for-10 from the field in the first six minutes of play, they were still in the game because of free throws.

The Bears had seven fouls in seven minutes in the first half and a foul by Kyson Rawls sent the Lancers to the bonus with 13 minutes remaining.

Morgan State finished the game with 24 personal fouls. David Syfax and Malik Miller fouled out in the second half.

"We have to learn how to be aggressive and not foul," Broadus said. "We're getting there, because in the second half we still were aggressive but we didn't foul. That's growth."

The Lancers would go on to shoot 16-for-19 from the charity stripe in the first half and 18-for-23 for the game. Wilson was perfect from the stripe by hitting 10-for-10 from the line.

Wilson finished with a team-high 15 points despite just hitting two baskets on the day (2-6 FG).

Morgan State was able to garner their largest lead of the half after a Grantsaan 3-pointer pushed the lead to 25-12. The Lancers responded by cutting into the deficit behind a 9-0 run which included four made free throws.

However, the Bears were able to fend off the Lancers and went into halftime with a 40-32 lead.

DeShaun Wade (13 points) helped the Lancers chip away at the lead in the second half.

After the intermission, the Lancers began to knocking down shots from three where they connected on 7-of-16 shots.

Wade shot 4-for-7 from three in the second half and sparked a 10-2 run for the Lancers to trim the lead to 53-51.

But the Bears once again held off the Lancers. With nine minutes remaining, the Bears went on a 12-3 run that spanned six minutes to extend their lead to 65-54.

Morgan State slowed the game down and mounted a 12 point lead (70-58) their largest lead of the half with 1:32 remaining.

The Bears will have a week of rest before traveling to Philadelphia to face the La Salle Explorers on Dec. 14 at 2 p.m.
