Lady Bears Roll Past S.C. State; Finish 4-1 Against MEAC South Members

Battle hits for a match-high .857 in first collegiate action.

BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 25, 2019)-The Morgan State volleyball team matched a season-long three-match winning streak, following a 3-0 (25-13, 25-8, 25-9) sweep of visiting South Carolina State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest on Friday night at Hill Field House.

The Lady Bears (11-11, 5-4 MEAC) improved to 23-0 all-time against S.C. State with the win, while also closing out cross divisional play against members of the MEAC Southern Division with a 4-1 record.

Sophomore Zoe McBride recorded a match-high 16 kills and added nine digs to fall shy of her 13th double-double of the season and junior Tylar Roberson finished with nine kills to help Morgan State improve to 6-3 at home this season.

However, it was freshman Melanie Battle, who stole the show. Battle, who was making her first start in her first collegiate action, totaled six kills on seven attempts with no errors for a match-high .857 attack percentage. She also added a match-high four blocks, including one solo to help the Lady Bears to a 5.0-1.0 advantage in blocks over S.C. State.

Senior Roi Wallace, who earlier this week earned MEAC Rookie of the Week honors, recorded 30 assists and fellow senior Jasmin Hubbard tallied eight digs. Wallace and McBride each totaled three service aces on the night.

South Carolina State (0-21, 0-7 MEAC) was led by Alexus Holt and Daivez Bell, who each had five kills. Jenai King and Holt each collected four digs. King led the Lady Bulldogs with nine assists.

Behind the hitting percentage of Battle (.857), McBride (.652), Roberson (.368), Jasmin Perry (.250) and Wallace (1.000), who had a kill on one attempt, the Lady Bears would hit .516 as a team. Morgan State recorded a match-best 14 kills in the first set with one attack error on 20 attempts for a set-high hitting percentage .650. The hosts would also record 11 kills each in the second and third sets for attack percentages of .500 and .409, respectively.

The Lady Bulldogs would hit -.169 as team, finishing with 12 kills on 65 attempts and 23 errors. S.C. State's best offensive outing came in the opening set, when it totaled six kills for an attack percentage of .167. The team would record just three kills each in the remaining two sets.

Morgan State will be off until next Tuesday, Oct. 29 when it welcomes crosstown rival Coppin State (9-13, 5-3 MEAC) to Hill Field House for MEAC Northern Division action. First serve is at 7 p.m.
