Norfolk State Shuts Down Morgan State’s Offense

NORFOLK, Va. (Oct. 14, 2019)-Morgan State returned to the volleyball court on Monday evening with a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division road contest at Norfolk State. The Lady Bears unfortunately would fall to the host Spartans, 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-16) at Gill Gymnasium.

The loss marked the third straight defeat for the Lady Bears, with all three contests coming by way of 3-0 scores. Norfolk State picked up its first win of the season, thus ending an 0-14 start to the season.

Morgan State (8-11, 2-4 MEAC, 1-3 MEAC North), which was coming off a six-day layoff, was led by Zoe McBride's match-high 11 kills. Tylar Roberson finished with six kills and Mykaela Ross added three. Jennevy Santos collected a team-high 17 digs, while Sophie Pajevic and Roberson each tallied 10 digs. Roi Wallace recorded a match-best 19 assists and seven digs.

Norfolk State (1-14, 1-5 MEAC, 1-3 MEAC North) was led by Jannel Ezeagwu, who recorded nine kills and hit for a match-high .474. Anna Rupertova also finished with nine kills and Julisa Carrizosa added eight. Myleah Carter totaled a match-high 21 digs and Carrizosa had 19. Jill Aquino had a team-high 18 assists and Halley McKnight added 16, for the Spartans, who improved to 7-22 all-time against Morgan State.

The Spartans hit .241 as a team, finishing with 39 kills for the match and 11 attack errors. Morgan State tallied 25 kills, but committed 20 attack errors for an .042 attack percentage.  

The hosts held an 8.0-1.0 advantage over Morgan State in blocks. Bojana Bolozan led the way with four blocks, while Ezeagwu finished with three, including two solos. Shadae Debraux had a solo block to record the lone block for the Lady Bears. 

The Lady Bears will travel to the Sunshine State of Florida this weekend to face MEAC Southern Division foes Bethune-Cookman (B-CU) and Florida A&M (FAMU). It will mark the first time since 2002 that Morgan State will visit the two Florida schools on their home floors.  

Morgan State will first visit the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats on Friday, Oct. 18 in Daytona Beach, before traveling to Tallahassee, Fla. to face the Rattlers of FAMU on Sunday, Oct. 20. The FAMU contest will be the first regular season meeting between the two teams since 2006.

The Lady Bears lead the all-time series against B-CU, 14-8. FAMU leads the series, 23-7 and has eliminated the Lady Bears from the MEAC Tournament the last two seasons.
