Lady Bears Capture 2018 MEAC Women’s Tennis Title

NORFOLK, Va. (April 28, 2018)-With a 4-1 win over Northern Division foe Hampton in the championship match of the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tennis Championship, Morgan State won its first women's tennis title since 1994.

The Lady Bears have now won two women's tennis titles overall.

Morgan State got off to a quick start, taking the doubles point in less than an hour. Once singles play started, Hampton rebounded with a win from Cherise Slocombe in the No. 4 slot, 6-1, 6-0 over Dana Santiago.

But Oriane Yehouenou picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over Haley Mullins, and Asmara Faluke defeated Anastasiia Romanova 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles to give the Lady Bears a 3-1 lead.

When Danielle Thompson, the MEAC Player of the Year, picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Mariam Mitaishvili at the No. 1 spot, it gave Morgan State the final point and the team's first championship in more than two decades.

Thompson, on top of being named to the All-Tournament Team, was named the Outstanding Performer.

Matthew Townes was named the tournament's Outstanding Coach.

Morgan State earned the MEAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships; the women's field will be announced on Tuesday at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com.
