BALTIMORE, Md. (April 17, 2018)-The Morgan State women's tennis and softball programs have both announced rescheduled contests to be played at home on Tuesday.
The Lady Bears tennis team will conclude their regular season with a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. First serve is at 11 a.m. at the MSU Tennis Courts. The match was originally scheduled for Saturday, April 7, but was postponed.
Morgan State (8-12, 4-1 MEAC) can wrap up second in the MEAC Northern Division with a victory over the Lady Hawks (0-6, 0-1 MEAC). A win would secure the Lady Bears spot as the No. 2 seed out of the northern division heading into the upcoming league championship.
Senior Danielle Thompson, who recorded her 51st career singles victory on Sunday at Norfolk State, is 13-7 this season at No. 1 singles to lead the Lady Bears. Thompson, who is currently riding a six-match winning streak, is 9-1 in her last 10 matches.
The 2018 MEAC tennis championships get underway on April 26-28 in Norfolk, Va.
The Morgan State softball team will conclude their three-game series against Delaware State on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Lois T. Murray Field.
The Lady Bears (20-13, 9-2 MEAC), who are putting together another historic season, have won 10 straight games. Morgan State swept the Hornets (9-25, 7-4 MEAC) in the doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 to move into sole position of first-place in the MEAC Northern Division.Â
Morgan State would shutout the visiting Hornets in both contests by a score of 11-0 in five innings in the opener, followed by a 4-0 victory in the nightcap.
Sophomore pitcher Stephanie Rundlett would earn both of the shutout victories, her first of the season, while improving to 10-6 on the season. Rundlett has thrown 82 strikeouts in 98.1 innings of work and has two saves to go with six complete games and one complete game shutout.
Offensively, the Lady Bears have been led by junior outfielder Damali Young, who is batting .410 with 48 hits, 36 runs, 11 doubles and 17 stolen bases, which are all team bests.
Fellow junior outfielder Giselle Alvarez is batting .356 with 36 hits, 32 runs, and 11 stolen bases, while leading the Lady Bears in triples (4) and walks (13). Alvarez and Young are both tied for the team lead with three homeruns apiece.
Junior Infielder Gabriella Gorosave has tallied a team-leading 28RBI and is batting .315 on the season with 34 hits, 13 runs, eight doubles, a triple, a homer and has walked seven times.
Senior pitcher Amy Begg (10-6) has pitched 112.2 innings this season and has a team-high 84 strikeouts. Begg, who has an ERA of 2.61, has pitched 10 complete games and has four complete game shutout victories and a save on the season.
Morgan State will welcome Villanova to Lois T. Murray Field on Wednesday, April 18 for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
