Softball To Host UMBC, St. Bonaventure In This Weekend’s MSU Invitational

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 10, 2018)-The Morgan State softball team returns to action this weekend for the MSU Invitational (March 10-11) at Lois T. Murray Field. The invitational marks the second straight home tournament for the Lady Bears, who last week hosted the MSU Tournament, as part of the Coppin State Eagle Classic Tournament.
 
The Lady Bears (5-9) will welcome the Retrievers of the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) on Saturday for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Morgan State will close out the tournament with a single game against St. Bonaventure on Sunday at noon.
 
Morgan State enters the weekend after going 2-2 during last weekend's MSU Tournament. The Lady Bears began with a 5-0 shutout victory over Lafayette, before dropping back-to-back contests against St. Bonaventure (10-3) and Fairleigh Dickinson (9-4). Morgan State closed out the tournament with an 8-1 victory over Saint Peter's.
 
The Lady Bears are led by Damali Young, who is batting .457 with 21 hits, 13 runs and three homeruns, all team-bests. Young has also recorded a team-leading six stolen bases in eight attempts and is now three steals away from becoming the school's all-time leader. Giselle Alvarez is batting .389 with 14 hits, eight runs and has four stolen bases in as many attempts.
 
On the mound, Amy Begg has an ERA of 2.40 to go with her 4-4 record. Begg has appeared in 10 games with eight starts and has pitched five complete games. She has pitched a team-leading 48.2 innings and has 44 strikeouts on the season.
 
Last week Begg picked up her second shutout of the season in a win over Lafayette, making her the all-time career leader at Morgan State with nine.
