BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 12, 2018)-Kalysia Bates recorded a match-high 17 kills to lead Morgan State to a 3-0 sweep of Delaware State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division matchup at Hill Field House on Friday evening. With the victory, the Lady Bears improved to 4-0 at home this season and have won their last eight contests at Hill Field House dating back to last season.
Bates would finish the night with just one error on 25 attempts for a match-high hitting percentage of .640, as Morgan State won its 14th straight contest over Delaware State and now leads the all-time series, 46-14.
Monette Daniels added nine kills, while Cristen Coryatt and Zoe McBride each had eight kills. Coryatt would lead the Lady Bears with 16 digs and Jasmin Hubbard totaled 10. Roi Wallace recorded a double-double with a match-best 38 assists and 11 digs.
The Lady Bears (11-9, 3-1 MEAC), who have reached double-digit wins for the first time since 2015 (13-15), finished the contest with 47 kills and an attack percentage of .327. Morgan State would record double-digit kills in all three sets, including a match-high 16 kills in both Set 1 and Set 2.
Morgan State was on fire in the opening set, as it tallied a hitting percentage of .500 after collecting 16 kills on 28 attacks and just two errors. The Lady Bears totaled another 16 kills in the second set and hit for .233, as they fought off three set-point advantages by the Hornets before claiming a 28-26 victory.
In the third set, the Lady Bears scored the first five points and led 8-1 after an attack error by Delaware State. The Hornets would use a 6-1 spurt to pull within 9-7, but that would be as close as they would get. Morgan State, which would record 15 kills for an attack percentage of .306, closed out the third and final set with an 8-4 run to win, 25-18.
Delaware State (2-19, 0-4 MEAC), which is on a five-match losing streak, has now dropped 11 of its last 12 contests and have been swept in each match during the five consecutive losses. The Hornets would finish with 28 kills and 18 attack errors for a .091 hitting percentage.Â
Caroline Rakoski led the Hornets with eight kills and Sydney Armbrister added seven kills, while hitting for .500. Milexa Cardona had 20 assists and Nia Scott finished with a match-high 23 digs.
Daniels recorded a match-high three blocks, including one solo, as the Lady Bears held a 3.0-2.0 blocking advantage over Delaware State. Mayah Ngundam and Kiera Holtzclaw each recorded two blocks for the Hornets.Â
Morgan State would struggle with its serve, committing 15 service errors. McBride would account for Morgan State's two service aces.
The Lady Bears will wrap up the first half of the MEAC slate on Sunday, Oct. 14 when they play host to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. First serve is at 3 p.m. at Hill Field House. Sunday's contest will be Girl Scouts Day.
