Lady Bears Shutdown Hawks; Takeover Second In MEAC North

BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 14, 2018)-Cristen Coryatt and Kalysia Bates each recorded a match-high 11 kills, while Monette Daniells and Zoe McBride added seven kills apiece to lead Morgan State past visiting Maryland Eastern Shore (MDES), 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-13) on Sunday afternoon at Hill Field House. With the win, Morgan State moves into sole possession of second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division standings, while the Hawks slip to third.

Morgan State (12-9, 4-1 MEAC), which has now won a season-best four consecutive matches, ended a four-match losing skid to the Hawks. It was the Lady Bears' first win over MDES since a 3-1 victory in Princess Anne, Md. on Oct. 30, 2015. During the Lady Bears' four-match winning streak, the last three victories have all been shutout wins.

McBride led Morgan State with 10 digs, while Coryatt added nine. Roi Wallace finished with a match-high 30 assists. Bates collected a match-high six blocks, three which were solo blocks, as Morgan State held an 8.0-4.0 blocking advantage over the Hawks. Kheanna Landrum added three blocks.

The Lady Bears finished the contest with 40 kills on 91 attack attempts and had 15 errors for a hitting percentage of .275. Daniels would lead the Lady Bears with a .545 attack percentage with her seven kills on 11 attempts and just one error. Landrum notched a .400 attack percentage, finishing with three kills on five attempts with one error.

Maryland Eastern Shore (6-13, 3-2 MEAC) was led by Lucia Babic, who had nine kills and five digs. Rachel Kayongo added seven kills and three digs. Koya Sowells finished with a match-high 16 digs and Ivana Blazevic totaled 13 assists and two blocks. 

The Hawks finished the afternoon with 21 kills, but also had 21 errors on 84 attempts for an attack percentage of .000.

For the second straight match, the Lady Bears struggled with their serve, finishing with 10 service errors, while recording two service aces. Friday night Morgan State committed 15 serving errors. The Hawks weren't much better, finishing with one ace and had eight errors.

Morgan State, which wrapped up the first half of the MEAC slate today, will now direct its attention to American University, as the Lady Bears welcome the Eagles to Hill Field House on Wednesday, Oct. 17 for its final non-conference match of the season at 7 p.m.
