CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Sept. 2, 2017)-The Lady Bears volleyball team ended the Redhawks Invitational on a high note on Saturday morning with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 19-25, 25-20) victory over the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Show Me Center. It was the first meeting between the two programs.
The win was the first of the season for Morgan State, which improved to 1-5 on the young campaign. The victory also kept Morgan State's unblemished record against Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) foes intact at a perfect 7-0.
The contest, which was a rare match-up for Morgan State against the SWAC, was the Lady Bears' first since a 3-0 victory over Prairie View A&M during the 1999 season.
Cristen Coryatt used Saturday's finale as an offensive coming out party for the Lady Bears. The junior transfer finished with a match-high 25 kills, as Morgan State finished with 60 kills for the match. Senior Keana Browne, who was named to the all-tournament team, finished with 11 kills.
Roi Wallace, who a day earlier set a career-best 50 assists, finished with 48 assists to lead all players and hit for a career-best 1.000, recording four kills on four attempts and a match-high three service aces. Jasmin Hubbard led the squad with a match-high 13 digs and Natashia Barker fell shy of a double-double with 11 digs and nine kills.
Morgan State jumped out to a 2-0 set lead, but the Lady Lions would fight back to take the third set by a score of 25-19.
UAPB (1-6) took a 17-16 lead in the fourth set when Lisa Casimie and Taylor Burrall combined for a block. The Lady Bears would score the next six points to take a 22-17 advantage. The Lady Lions would get as close as 23-20, but Morgan State would close out the set and match, following back-to-back errors on UAPB.
The Lady Lions were led by Casimie, who had 16 kills and Taylor Sheppy had 11. Britney Sahlmann finished with 20 assists and Katy Hufnagel had 16 assists. UAPB held a 9.0-1.0 blocking advantage over Morgan State. Burrall had a match-high seven blocks, while Casimie added six.
Morgan State will travel to the Nation's Capital on Tuesday, Sept. 5 to take on the Eagles of American in a non-conference contest at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C. First serve is at 7 p.m.
