ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (May 11, 2017)-What had been one of the most successful seasons in school history unfortunately came to an abrupt end on Thursday evening, as the Lady Bears were eliminated from the 2017 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Championship with the loss.
Â
Morgan State, the third-seed out of the MEAC Northern Division would suffer a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to the fourth-seeded Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central (NCCU) in an elimination game at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
Â
The defeat was the seventh straight for the Lady Bears (23-23), who also concluded the season losing their final eight games and went 1-9 in their last 10 contests.
Â
The Lady Bears' 23 wins rank second-most in school history, two wins shy of the school record set by the 1998 team with 25 victories.
Â
Less than an hour after dropping their opening game against Bethune-Cookman, the Lady Bears were back on the field to face NCCU.
Â
Morgan State got on the board first in the top of the third inning when
Danielle Pitpit, who led off the inning with a walk, later scored on a single by
Kate Vosper for the 1-0 lead.
Â
NCCU (13-29) responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 advantage. Starting pitcher Dominique Wilson helped her own cause when she doubled down the right-field line to score two runs and give the Eagles what would be the game winning runs.
Â
The score would hold up for the next four innings, as Wilson capped off the win by recording back-to-back strikeouts in the seventh inning to end the game. The victory would be the first-ever for NCCU's program in the MEAC Softball Championships.
Â
Wilson improved to 9-16 with the win and finished the game throwing six strikeouts, two walks and allowed one run on two hits in the complete game victory.
Â
Amy Begg totaled a game-high seven strikeouts in the loss and concluded the season with a 20-14 record. Her 20 wins fell one shy of tying the school record for victories.
Â
The Lady Bears, who were held to just one hit in the opener against Bethune-Cookman, collected two hits against the Lady Eagles with Vosper and
Stormy Zyzyk recording those hits.   Â
