Morgan State Cheer Bears Place 4th at NCA Collegiate Championship

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 7, 2017) -- The Morgan State Cheerleaders recently competed in the NCA Collegiate Championships held in Daytona Beach, Fla. It marked the 18th time since 1999 that the group has competed at the NCA Collegiate Championship and the Cheer Bears once again showed why they are the top HBCU All-Girl cheer team in the nation.

Competing in the All-Girl Cheer Division I, the team competed against the likes of New Hampshire, Sam Houston State, Central Connecticut State, Harvard and Towson. Teams were judged within several categories including tumbling, partner stunts, pyramids, baskets, jumps, choreography, degree of difficulty, overall effect and more.

In the finals, the Cheer Bears turned in an impressive performance with an overall score of 89.50 which resulted in a fourth-place finish -- just two points shy of the title.

New Hampshire captured first place in the division with a final score of 91.50, followed by Sam Houston State in second place (91.35), and Towson finished in third (90.53). Central Connecticut State placed fifth behind Morgan State with a score of 85.18, and Harvard finished sixth (80.95).

"I am so proud of this team!" said MSU head coach Theresa Gibson. "Yesterday, in the preliminary rounds, everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. After two grueling practices after yesterday's wipe out, our ladies pulled out everything they had in them to gain back their respect."

"We had a few errors, but the crowd support and their own determination allowed them to finish strong," added Gibson. "They were lively and confident until the last eight count."

"I don't care what the judges say. After today's comeback performance, they are number one in my eyes."
