Men's Tennis Falls to Rattlers in MEAC Semifinals, 4-1

S.C. State, Florida A&M To Meet For MEAC Championship

NORFOLK, Va., April 21, 2017—Morgan State, the top seed from the Northern Division, fell in Friday's semifinals of the 2017 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's Tennis Championship, held at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University.
 
The Bears fell 4-1 to Florida A&M, the No. 2 seed from the Southern Division.
 
The Rattlers will take on South Carolina State, the Southern Division's top seed, in Saturday's championship match. The Bulldogs advanced with a 4-0 win over Northern Division No. 2 seed Norfolk State.
 
After Florida A&M took the doubles point to open the proceedings, they took three of the four singles matches that were completed. Courage Okungbowa picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jeremy Field in the No. 1 position, and Walner Espinoza defeated Lucas Krusinksi 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4.

Junior Arjun Ramakrishnan recorded a straight set, 6-3, 6-1, victory against FAMU's Carlos Waitman at No. 2 for the Bears only win of the match.
 
Illya Skoromnyy (6-2, 6-1) also won at the No. 6 position.
 
The Bulldogs took the doubles point against Norfolk State, before going on to take three singles matches in straight sets. Martin Figura took the No. 1 singles match over Andres Alcaraz, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, while Stanislav Baco won his No. 5 singles match 6-1, 6-3.
 
Aleksander Stupar defeated Ignacio Guevel 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 6 position.
 
South Carolina State is looking for its eight straight title – and its 11th in the last 12 years. Florida A&M, meanwhile, is looking for its first men's tennis title since 2000.
 
Saturday's championship match will kick off at 12 p.m. for the men.
 
The championship is free and open to the public.
