Morgan State Edged Out By Norfolk State On Senior Day, 4-3

Senior Katia Jordan
BALTIMORE, Md. (April 15, 2017)-The Morgan State women's tennis team had its three-match winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon, as visiting Norfolk State spoiled the Lady Bears' Senior Day with a 4-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory at the MSU Tennis Courts.

Morgan State fell to 7-16 overall, 4-2 in the MEAC Northern Division, while Norfolk State improved to 6-, 3-2 MEAC. The Lady Bears, who have now concluded their MEAC slate, still sit in second in the northern division standings. However, Norfolk State can solidify the second spot if it defeats Coppin State on Sunday, by way of its win over Morgan State.

"We lost a tough match on Senior Day to a very good team," said Morgan State head coach Matt Townes. "We were short handed to start the match and I think the difference was made in doubles. We weren't able to win both of the matches for the doubles point and it cost us. Although we were only playing for seeding at championships, I like how we are playing and our chances next week."

The Lady Bears' doubles team of Katia Jordan and Kayla Price won their No. 1 doubles match, but the Spartans would win at No. 2 and earned the third doubles match by default to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

Morgan State would claim victory at the No. 2-No.4 singles spots. Juniors Danielle Thompson and Kayla Price earned wins in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Jordan, who had been battling through an injury the past few matches, earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Norfolk State's Paula Fortuno in a No. 4 contest. Jordan, who was the lone senior for the Lady Bears, was honored prior to the match.

The Spartans, however, would win the final two matches, including a default victory at No. 6 for the match victory.
