DOVER, Del. (April 14, 2017)-The Lady Bears extended their season long winning streak to six straight games following a 2-1 eighth inning victory at Delaware State in the opening game of their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division doubleheader on Friday afternoon at the Hornets' Nest.
Morgan State improved to 18-11, 7-0 in MEAC with the win, while Delaware State fell to 11-23, 8-4 MEAC.
The win is just the Lady Bears' sixth over Delaware State in the last 45 meetings dating back to 2004. Prior to today's victory, Morgan State's last win over Delaware State came on April 4, 2015 an 8-3 win in Dover.
Danielle Pitpit broke a scoreless game when she hit a lead off homer to left center to begin the third inning and give the guests a 1-0 lead.
That lead would hold up until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Hornets' Micaela Cummings hit a two-out double to right centerfield to score Danielle Velez to tie the score at 1-1 and force an eighth inning.
Morgan State would reclaim the lead for good when pinch hitter Stormy Zyzyk singled in Annisa Morales with one out in the top of the extra frame to give the guests a 2-1 lead.
Delaware State would hve runners at first and second in the bottom half of the eighth inning, by Morgan State pitcher Amy Begg, would get the Hornets' Velez to fly out to center for the final out.Â
Begg, who improved to 16-5 on the season, threw five strikeouts, allowed three walks, and a run on eight hits in eight innings of work. Pitpit's homerun was her first of the season, while Damali Young recorded two more stolen bases to up her school single-season record to 34 and 64 for her career. She is now 15 stolen bases shy of becoming the all-time steals leader at Morgan State. Â
The Hornets totaled eight hits in the game and left nine runners on base. Cummings went 2-for-2 at the plate with a RBI, while Khaliyah Flournory finished with two hits in four at bats. Tara Tursellino (2-9), who was charged with the loss, recorded seven strikeouts in eight innings pitched.
