BALTIMORE, Md. (April 12, 2017)-The Morgan State softball team will look to build on what's been a successful past week for the Lady Bears, when they travel to Dover, Del. this weekend for a three-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division series against the Delaware State Hornets.
The series, which will be the first three of 13 straight road games for Morgan State, gets underway on Friday, April 14 with a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. The two will wrap up the weekend with a single game on Saturday at noon. All three games will be played at the Hornets Nest on the Delaware State campus.
Morgan State (17-11, 6-0 MEAC) is coming off its first-ever three-game series sweep over Norfolk State this past weekend. The victories extended the Lady Bears' winning streak to five straight and coupled by the Hornets' Game 3 victory at Hampton on Sunday, Morgan State moved into sole possession of first-place in the league standings.
On Monday, sophomore outfielder
Damali Young, who leads the MEAC and ranks second in the nation in stolen bases with 32, was named MEAC Player of the Week. It was the first MEAC weekly honor for Young. Junior pitcher
Amy Begg was named MEAC Pitcher of the Week for the fifth time this season.
The Lady Bears received some more good news on Tuesday, when they were ranked fourth in the latest HBCU Softball D-1 Poll, up two spots from last week's sixth-place ranking.
Delaware State (11-22, 8-3 MEAC) enters the weekend in third-place in the northern division standings after dropping two of three contests to second-place Hampton. Losers of four of their last five games, the Hornets are coming off a non-conference doubleheader loss at George Washington on Tuesday.
The Hornets have won four straight against Morgan State and hold a commanding 39-5 record against the Lady Bears since 2004. Morgan's last win over Delaware State was an 8-3 defeat of Hornets on April 4, 2015 in Dover.
