BALTIMORE, Md. -- Morgan State men's tennis pulled out a close win over the Hampton Pirates, 4-3, on a chilly, overcast Saturday at the MSU Tennis Courts.
The team improves to 3-12 overall and 1-0 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play.
The match began with the doubles teams of Jeremy Field and Lucas Krusinski prevailing winning 6-2. Morgan State won the doubles point when the duo of Nihit Rawal and Ondej Labik defeated Juan Araoz and Matthew Foster-Estwick 6-4.
In singles, Morgan State won three of the six courts. Labik started it off for the Bears by posting a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Fedor Shirin. Ramaakrishnan followed it up with a win at No. 2 singles, defeating Foster-Estwick 6-1, 6-1.
At No. 4 singles, Krusinski had a hard fought 3-set battle against Hampton's Charles Hudson before eventually falling 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. The Pirates pressed the momentum when Araoz handed Field a 6-2, 7-6 loss at No. 1.
In the final, match-clinching set, Rawal trailed during the early going against Peter Odegbami before turning in a 3-6, 6-4,6-2 win to secure the victory.
"We played very well today and held off a great team," said coach Matthew Townes. "Undefeated at home and undefeated in our division feels good. If we play like that for the rest of the season we will be very hard to beat."
They're back in action tomorrow (April 2) when they travel to face the University of Delaware.
