Women’s Tennis Rolls Past NC Central, 5-2

DURHAM, N.C. (March 23, 2017)-Two days after having their season-long three-match winning streak snapped at Campbell, the Morgan State Lady Bears tennis team was back in the win column, as they defeated North Carolina Central by a score of 5-2 in a non-conference match on Thursday afternoon at the NCCU Tennis Courts.

Morgan State (4-12) improved to 3-1 during its scheduled five-match Spring Break tour, which began on Sunday, March 19 in Farmville, Va. The Lady Bears close out their tour on Saturday, March 25, when they travel to Wilmington, N.C. to take on the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

After dropping another close doubles point, the Lady Bears regrouped to win five out of the six singles matches, including the top four singles spots. All five of Morgan State's singles wins were in straight sets for the win.

Katia Jordan picked up a No. 1 singles victory over N.C. Central's Jamie Rogers 6-3, 6-2 and Chloe Kabamba recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Jasmine Gabriel at No. 2 singles. Danielle Thompson was a 6-0, 6-3 winner against the Eagles' Lynsey Cover at No. 3. Kayla Price extended her winning streak to six consecutive matches, following her 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles over Emily Pena. Dana Santiago rounded out the scoring for the Lady Bears with a No. 6 win over Lauren Mullis 6-0, 6-1.

"This was another great win for the program today," said Morgan State head coach Matt Townes. "We lost a tight doubles point, which I believe gave us the chip on our shoulders that motivated us in singles. NCCU is a quality team and we performed very well on their turf in a hostile environment. We have a lot more work to do this season and we are starting to hit on all cylinders."
