Bears Visit Bethune-Cookman Saturday

GAME TIME
• Morgan State looks to snap a 2-game losing skid when they travel to Daytona Beach (Fla.) to face the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Municipal Stadium. The game will be broadcast by WEAA, 88.9FM.

• The Bears enter the 2017 season under the leadership of Fred T. Farrier who had the interim tag removed and assumed the full-time position as MSU's head football coach.

• MSU fell to 1-7 with a 34-31 loss last weekend against Florida A&M. Bethune-Cookman rallied to beat Hampton 24-21 last Saturday and improved to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

WEAA, 88.9 FM is the flagship station for the Morgan State Bears ... Lamont Germany will call the play-by-play with Kelvin Bridgers in the booth. The game will be broadcast live on 88.9 FM and streamed on WEAA.org. 

THE SERIES
• Saturday's matchup marks the 30th meeting between the two schools.  
• B-CU leads the series against the Bears with an overall record of 21-8 since the teams first played in 1986.
• B-CU posted a 38-14 victory in the last meeting in Daytona in 2015.
• The Bears fell 41-10 in last season's meeting against the Wildcats  on Nov. 5, 2016 in Baltimore.
• The Bears have lost 5-straight meetings since 2010.
• The first meeting between the two institutions came on Sept. 13,1986, when head coach Jesse Thomas' Bears fell at Bethune-Cookman, 52-9.

QUICK HITS
• After Week 9, the Bears rank No. 2 in the FCS in total TFL (73) and T-No. 19 in team sacks (22).
• Senior WR Amonta Poteat set career highs with seven catches and 99 receiving yards against Florida A&M.His previous highs was six catches vs. Holy Cross in the 2016, and his previous high in receptions yards was earlier this season when he had 47 yards on five catches at Towson.
• R-junior QB Elijah Staley's (6-7, 240) three touchdown passes vs. Savannah State was the most by a Bear quarterback since Chris Andrews tossed three TDs against Howard on Sept. 24, 2016.
• MSU's season-high 48 points vs. Savannah State was the most points scored by the Bears since defeating Delaware State at Hughes Stadium by a score of 69-7 on Nov. 22, 2014.
• NT Jai Franklin was named to the 2016 All-MEAC Second Team as a junior. Franklin was a force on the Bears' defensive line where he finished the 2016 season with 50 stops, 13.0 TFL and four sacks.
• SS Carl Garnes was a standout for the Bears secondary a season ago. The Columbus, N.J. native was named to the 2016 All-MEAC Third Team and garnered 35 tackles and a pair of INTs in 10 games played.
Fred T. Farrier's Bears are predicted to finish 8th in the MEAC's 2017 Preseason Order of Finish. 

A GLANCE AT THE WILDCATS
•  Bethune-Cookman finished 2016 with an overall mark of 4-6 and finished 4-4 in MEAC play under head coach Terry Sims.
Larry Brihm Jr. threw for 262 yards and a score and reliever Akevious Williams threw the go-ahead touchdown with 3:10 remaining to lift Bethune-Cookman past Hampton 24-21 on Saturday. Sam Marc intercepted a Delmon Williams' pass and Adam Brown missed a game-tying 29-yard field goal attempt as time expired on Hampton's final two drives.
•  Head coach Terry Sims's (Knoxville, '94) offense is ranked No. 3 in the MEAC averaging 342.4 yards of total offense (142.9 rushing; 199.5 passing). They have scored 9 rushing TDs and 7 passing. The Rattlers average 3.9 yards per rush and 6.0 per pass, including 10.4 per catch.
•  B-CU's offense is led by talented senior QB Larry Brihm Jr. The 5-11,209-pound Delray Beach (Fla.) product has completed 137-of-228 passes (60.1%)  for 1,486 yards, with 5 TDs (second most in MEAC) and 4 INTs. He also has 64 carries for 105 yards and 4 TDs.  He ranks No. 4 in the MEAC in passing average (185.8 avg) and No. 6 in total offense (198.9 avg).
•  RB Michael Jones is averaging 57.2 rushing yards per game with two TDs. The 5-11, 197 pound r-senior ranks No. 8 in the MEAC with 343 yards on 73 carries (4.7 avg). He also has 13 receptions for 90 yards.
Keavon Mitchell (5-9, 173), Frank Brown (5-11, 185) and Jawill Davis (5-11, 177) lead the Wildcats air attack. Mitchell has 31 catches for 297 yards (9.6 avg), while Brown has 25 catches for 261 yards and three TDs. Davis has 284 yards on 24 receptions, including a pair of TDs.
• B-CU is allowing 370.4 yards of total offense (rushing 209.4; passing 161.0). The Wildcats have also forced 9 turnovers (7 INTs; 2 FRs). Opponents are averaging 5.7 yards per play. The Wildcats have recorded 52 TFL.
• B-CU's D is led by junior linebacker Diquan Richardson and senior safety Marquis Hendrix. Richardson, (5-11, 167) ranks No. 6 in the league with 62 tackles and 3 INTs (T-No. 4 in MEAC), while Hendrix (6-1, 230) has 53 stops with five TFL and four sacks. 
• B-CU has one of the best kickers in the league in Uriel Hernandez. The Homestead, Fla. native is ranked No. 1 in the league (T-No. 4 FGs 1.57 per game in FCS) by connecting on 11-of-16 field goals.

NOTABLE NATIONAL NOTES
Here are a few 2017 FCS national statistics of note on offense, defense and special teams that pertained to the Bears:
Malachi Washington currently ranks in the No. 1 in the FCS in tackles for loss (15.5), and T-24 in sacks (6.0). Tra' Revell is tied for No. 1 in the nation with 3 blocks.
• The Bears rank No. 2 in tackles for loss (73).
• The Bears rank T-No. 4 in blocked kicks (4).
• The Bears rank T-No. 19 in sacks (22).
• The Bears rank T-No. 21 in sacks allowed (9).
• The Bears rank No. 33 in passing yards allowed (190.8).
• The Bears rank No. 35 in punt returns (9.83).
• The Bears rank No. 44 in total defense (349.1)

FLORIDA CONNECTIONS
Saturday's contest features a few Bears on the roster from the state of Florida. Senior running back Eric Harrell (Orlando/Dr. Phillips HS), sophomore linebacker Rico Kennedy (Fort Lauderdale/Dillard HS), and redshirt sophomore wideout Dominick Trigg (Tampa/Strawberry Crest HS) call The Sunshine State their home.

TWO-HEADED RUNNING ATTACK
Leading the Bears out of the backfield are Herb Walker Jr., who set the school's single season rushing record 1,408 yards, and  Eric Harrell.
• Walker  leads the Bears with 401 rushing yards (2 TDs) and ranks No. 9 in the MEAC. He recorded his 8th career 100-yard rushing game with a season-high 109 yards against Savannah State (Oct. 14).
• Harrell has 375 yards on 83 attempts (4.5 avg) with 3 TDs and ranks No. 10 in the MEAC. He posted a season-high 114 yards yards on 16 carries, including a TD versus Savannah State (Oct. 14). 
• Morgan State currently ranks No. 7 in the MEAC in rushing yards per game (124.4).
