BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 3, 2017)-The Morgan State women's basketball team will look for a fresh start in 2017, beginning with Wednesday's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener against Norfolk State. Tip-off is at 5 p.m. at Hill Field House. It will be the first game of the New Year for both teams. Â
BEAR CLAWS: Morgan State (2-11) enters the contest on a season-long five-game losing skid, following a 68-51 home loss to Brown on New Year's Eve (12/31/16). The Lady Bears were led by
Zuri White, who finished with a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Braennan Farrar scored all of her 12 points in the fourth quarter, going 10-for-11 from the free throw line.
Jayde Duncan added a career-high nine points. Farrar has led the Lady Bears thus far in scoring (14.1), steals (36) and assists (35). Williams is adding 9.8 points and also ranks second in rebounding (5.4) and steals (23). White leads the team with 5.8 boards per game.Â
SPARTAN LEGION: Norfolk State (5-7) enters on a two-game losing streak after dropping a tough 61-58 loss at Towson (12/29). The five wins are the most for the Spartans before January since the 2013-
14 season. Kiara Phillips scored a team-high 15 points and had a game-high four assists. Dominique Harper added 12 points in the loss. Kayla Roberts has paced the Spartans with 12.8 points per game, 9.3 rebounds, 20 steals and 14 blocks. Jordan Strode is contributing 12.5 points and a team-leading 28 assists.
MSU VS. NORFOLK STATE SERIES NOTES: Norfolk State leads the series, 20-15, but the Lady Bears swept last season's series. The Lady Bears won the first meeting, 67-58 in Baltimore (12/5/15) and held on for a 59-56 victory in Norfolk (2/13/16).
NEXT UP: The Lady Bears will head to the Sunshine State this weekend for its first MEAC roadtrip of the season. Morgan State will first face defending MEAC regular season champion Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, Jan. 2 at 2 p.m. in Daytona Beach, before taking on the Rattlers of Florida A&M on Monday, Jan. 4 at 6 p.m. in Tallahassee.
FARRAR JOINS THE 1,000-POINT CLUB: Braennan Farrar became the 14th member in program history to join the 1,000-point club at Morgan State. Farrar, who entered the Richmond game (12/27) needing nine points to reach the plateau, scored her ninth and final point of the game on a layup at the 7:27 mark in the third quarter. She now has 1,012 points for her career.
SCHEDULE CHANGE: Morgan State's MEAC opener against Norfolk State has now been changed to Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 5 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men's team at Hill Field House. The game was originally scheduled for Monday, Jan. 2 at 5:30 p.m.Â
HARRINGTON HIGHLIGHTED: Ivy Harrington was recently highlighted in ESPN's The Undefeated. The article titled Proud Witnesses to History, was written by Michael A. Fletcher and focused on the cultural impact of President Obama's White House tenure.
MORGAN PICKED FIFTH IN MEAC: Morgan State was picked to finish fifth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) preseason poll, as voted by the league's head coaches and sports information directors. Last year, the Lady Bears were picked to finish ninth, but put together an 13-17 overall mark and finished 10-6 in the MEAC to finish fifth.
FARRAR NAMED TO PRESEASON MEAC SECOND TEAM: MSU junior guard
Braennan Farrar was named to the Preseason All-MEAC second team. A native of St. Louis, Mo., Farrar was second on the team in scoring (13.7), while leading the Lady Bears in assists (98), steals (63), three-pointers made (46), while shooting a team-best .794 (104-131) from the free throw line. This is the second consecutive preseason second-team All-MEAC honor for Farrar, who last season was named to the 2015-16 All-MEAC second team at the conclusion of the season.
