PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Aug. 27, 2016)-Jen Coffey finished with a match-high 13 kills and Allison Leigh added 10, as the Quinnipiac Bobcats defeated Morgan State 3-1 (25-11, 25-14, 22-25, 25-12) in the finale for both teams in the La Salle Invitational at Tom Gola Arena.
With the loss, Morgan State closed out the La Salle Tournament and the opening weekend with an 0-4 mark. The Bobcats improved to 3-1 on the weekend and evened the all-time series with Morgan State to 3-3.Â
Morgan State trailed 9-4 in the opening set, before the Bobcats used a 5-1 run to extend their lead to 14-5. The Lady Bears went on a mini 4-0 run to get within 15-9, but the Bobcats countered with a 9-0 spurt to take a 24-9 lead. The Lady Bears would score the next two points, before Quinnipiac got a kill from Kaleigh Oates for the 25-11 win.
Morgan State and Quinnipiac traded point for point in the second set with neither team taking more than a two-point lead through the first 14 points. The Bobcats would break a 14 all tie, by using an 11-0 run to close out the set and take a 25-14 victory over Morgan State.
Quinnipiac used a 5-0 run in the third set to break a 7-7 tie and take a 12-7 lead. Morgan State made a defensive substitution and rattled off six straight points to reclaim the lead at 13-12. After the Bobcats tied the score at 13, Morgan State then used a 4-0 run to increase its lead to 17-13. Quinnipiac pulled within a point at 18-17, but the Lady Bears upped the lead to 24-19 after a 6-2 spurt. The Bobcats would not go away and scored the next three points to cut the deficit to 24-22. But a kill by Haley McClure would end the set and give the Lady Bears a 25-22 victory.
The Bobcats scored the first four points and 11 of the first 12 points scored to take an 11-1 lead over Morgan State in the fourth set. Quinnipiac led 13-4, before Morgan State began to make a push, scoring four straight points to cut the lead to 14-8. A kill by Barker made it a 17-11 contest, but Morgan State would get no closer. The Bobcats would score the next four points in the midst of an 8-1 run to close out the set for the 25-12 victory.
Morgan State was led by Barker, who finished with 10 kills, while Minja Rankov had a match-high 15 digs. McClure added eight kills and a team-high three service aces and Monette Daniels recorded a match-high three blocks. Roi Wallace tallied 28 assists.
The Lady Bears travel to East Lansing, Mich. next weekend to take part in the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational (Sept. 3-4), hosted by Michigan State at Jenison Field House. It will be the Lady Bear programs' first-ever trip to Michigan. On Saturday, Morgan State will take on the host Spartans at noon, before facing Florida at 4:30 p.m. The Lady Bears will close out the tournament with a 1 p.m. match on Sunday against Central Michigan. All three opponents will be first-time foes of Morgan State.
