PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Aug. 27, 2016)-The Morgan State Lady Bears opened up Day 2 of the La Salle Invitational with a 3-0 (12-25, 12-25, 10-25) non-conference loss to Saint Francis-Pa. on Day 2 of the La Salle Invitational at Tom Gola Arena on the La Salle University campus.
Emily Marcinowski had a match-high eight kills and Kelsey Roush added seven to help the Red Flash earn their first victory of the season. Amelia Metzler had a match-high 21 assists and Jenna Veres finished with a team-high 15 digs, as SFU improved to 4-5 all-time against Morgan State.
Keana Browne led the Lady Bears (0-3) with four kills, while Natashia Barker and Milan Amos each added three kills apiece. Minne Masoe finished with 10 assists, while Minja Rankov tallied a match-high 15 digs.
After taking a quick 2-1 lead in the opening set, Saint Francis-Pa. went on a 6-1 run to take a 7-3 advantage. Morgan State used a 5-2 run of its own to cut the deficit to 9-8, following a kill by Milan Amos. The one-point deficit would be as close as the Lady Bears would get, as SFU used a 16-4 run, including scoring the final nine points to claim a 25-12 victory.
The Red Flash (1-2) jumped out to a 7-1 lead to start the second set and held a 16-7 lead to force a Morgan State timeout. After the timeout, SFU would go on a 5-2 run to extend its lead to 21-9 and eventually would win, 25-12 to take a 2-0 lead in the contest.
Saint Francis began the third set, scoring the first four points and held a 7-1 advantage after a kill by Roush. Morgan State made a slight push to try and make something happen, but the Red Flash used a 10-3 run to take a 17-5 lead to force a Morgan State timeout. The Red Flash would come out of the timeout and close out the set and match with an 8-5 run to take the final set, 25-10 and win the match in three sets.Â
SFU recorded 32 kills and had 10 hitting errors for the match and finished with a hitting percentage of .268, while the Lady Bears totaled 15 kills and had 21 attack errors for a -.060 hitting percentage.
Morgan State will play its final contest of the tournament at 5 p.m., when it takes on Quinnipiac.
