Lady Bears Drop Opener to Savannah State, 13-0

Results

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (May 12, 2016)-It's been five years since the Lady Bears last appeared in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) softball championships. Morgan State, the fourth seed out of the northern division, made its return to the postseason tournament on Thursday morning with a first round game against Savannah State, the top seed out of the southern division at Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

Unfortunately, Morgan State's return to the league championships got spoiled by a hot Savannah State squad, which defeated the Lady Bears, 13-0 in five innings.

Savannah State (25-21) set the tone early, when pitcher Amanda Hallman struck out the side in the first inning. Cortni Jones got the Lady Tigers on the board when she hit a two-out three-run shot to left field in the bottom of the first inning to give the Lady Tigers an early 3-0 advantage.

The Lady Tigers went back to work in the very next inning, scoring seven more runs in the second inning to take a 10-0 lead.

Savannah State ended its scoring, adding three more runs in the third inning to extend the cushion to 13-0.

Brianna Harris doubled to left field to score Chasney Jenkins for the first run and Alexis Singleton reached on a Morgan State error, which allowed Harris to score. Singleton would later score the 13th run of the game when Hallman singled to left field.

Morgan State's best scoring opportunity of the contest came in the top of the fourth inning when the Lady Bears loaded the bases with no outs. However, the Lady Bears would be unable to score, as Hallman would strikeout the next three batters to get out of the inning.

The Lady Bears will return to action later this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. when they play the loser from the Florida A&M-Norfolk State game.
