Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 2, 2016)-The Morgan State softball team produced its largest scoring output of the season in Game 1 of its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader series on Saturday afternoon against rival Howard at the Washington Nationals Baseball Academy.
The Lady Bears would take the opener 11-3. The win improved Morgan State to 12-30 all-time against Howard and was the team's third win in the last seven meetings against the Lady Bison.
Morgan State (6-20, 2-2 MEAC) got on the board first with two runs in the first inning when Damali Young scored on a single up the middle by Audrianna Alvarez. Alvarez would later score on a fielder's choice hit by Kimberly Salvas.
The guests would get a solo home run by Kate Vosper in the third and increased their cushion to 5-0 when Kimberly Fontaine hit a two-run homer to give Morgan State a 5-0 lead after four innings.
Howard finally got on the board with a run in the fourth to cut the Morgan State lead to 5-1.
The Lady Bears went back to work with three runs in the fifth to take an 8-1 lead. Howard got a solo homer from Imani Ballard in the fifth and added a run in the sixth to make it an 8-3 game.
Morgan State then sealed the deal with three more runs in the top of the seventh inning for the 11-3 victory. Alvarez led off the inning with a home run for the first run. A sacrifice fly by Daniel Pitpit scored Korynna Lara to give Morgan State a 10-3 lead. Fontaine, who would walk to get on base, later scored on a single hit by Caitlyn Williams for the final run.Â
