Box Score NORFOLK, Va. (April 10, 2016)-The host Norfolk State Spartans softball team would earn a doubleheader split against Morgan State on Sunday afternoon with a 5-3 come-from-behind victory in Game 2 at NSU Softball Field.
Â
Morgan State (10-21, 5-3 MEAC) scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead, but the Spartans got a run back in the bottom of the first inning to pull within 2-1.
Â
A double to left field by Heather Dunning in the second inning, drove in Devon Bitler to even the score at 2-2.
Â
The Lady Bears reclaimed the lead in the third inning when
Audrianna Alvarez hit a sacrifice fly to score
Damali Young and give Morgan State a 3-2 lead.
Â
Morgan State was in a good position to add to its cushion in the top of the fifth inning when
Korynna Lara came to the plate with bases loaded and one out. Lara would hit into an inning ending double play, keeping it a one run lead for the guests.
Â
Norfolk State (11-17, 6-3 MEAC) came right back in the bottom of the fifth inning and put together its best scoring opportunity in awhile. Unlike the Lady Bears in the top half of the inning, the Spartans would take advantage. With runners on second and third and no outs, Megan Przeslawski would walk to load the bases for Hunter Halford, who would strikeout for the first out. Stephanie Davenport doubled down the right field line to clear the bases and advanced to third on the throw to give the hosts a 5-3 lead. Bitler then walked to give the Spartans runners at first and third and end the day for Morgan State pitcher
Amy Begg.
Erica Hawkins would replace Begg in the circle and got Dunning to pop up and Seana Moriarty fly out to prevent any further damage.
Â
However, the Lady Bears would get just one runner on base the remaining two innings and would fall to the Spartans, 5-3.
Â
Young led the Lady Bears with her 3-for-4 performance at the plate, including two runs scored and two stolen bases, giving her a team-leading 22. Alvarez finished 1-for-2 with a team-high 2RBI. Begg (7-10), who was charged with the loss, went 4 and 1/3 innings, and had four strikeouts.
Â
The two teams are scheduled to make up the third game of the series on Saturday, May 7 in Norfolk, Va. The start time has yet to be announced.
