BALTIMORE, Md. -- Even though the Morgan State Bears came back from an early deficit, it wasn't to be this afternoon as Corey Henson's two free throws with 21.4 seconds left provided the difference in Wagner's 68-66 victory over the Bears at Hill Field House.
It came down to rebounding and turnovers late in the game as Morgan State (3-7) and Wagner were nip and tuck for most of the second half.
"It's tough," said MSU coach
Todd Bozeman. "We can't make mistakes in the end. We can't turn the ball over and can't give up offensive rebounds. We gave up four offensive rebounds late in the game. So those were crucial for us. We just got to get better."
After a
Kyle Thomas jumper tied the game at 60, Wagner's Shack Scott converted a lay-up after rebounding Corey Henson's missed lay-up attempt with 3:01 left to give the Seahawks a 62-60 advantage.
The Bears answered back when
Phillip Carr nailed his only three-point shot of the afternoon to give MSU a 63-62 lead with 2:46 left. Carr had another solid game with 17 points and 12 rebounds. But Wagner's possessions were huge, especially due to the crucial offensive rebounding late.
On the Seahawks' next possession, Jojo Cooper missed a three point attempt. But Michael Carey was on the spot collecting the rebound and converting huge lay-up to go ahead for good 64-63 with 2:13 left.
On MSU's next possession, Isaiah Graves attempted a pass inside the paint that was stolen by Carey, which led to an AJ Sumbry lay-up, increasing the Wagner (3-5) lead to 66-63 with 1:10 left. Graves made up for that turnover by nailing a three-pointer to tie the game at 66 with 53 seconds left. Graves led all scorers with a season-high 20 points in the game.
On the Seahawks' last possession, Henson was driving to the hoop with the shot clock running down to two seconds. Henson drove into Graves in the paint. However, Graves was called for the foul, which led to the game winning free throws. Henson led Wagner with 19 points on the afternoon.
Morgan State had a couple chances to win or tie the game on the last possession of the game. But a three-point attempt by
David Syfax was long and Carr's follow up attempt rimmed out at the buzzer.
Next game for the Bears is a trip to University Park, Pennsylvania to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions on December 21.
