BALTIMORE, Md. (Sept. 7, 2015)-The Lady Bears volleyball team will host Georgetown in a non-conference match on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Hill Field House. The contest, which will be the home opener for Morgan State, gets underway at 7 p.m.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two programs with the Hoyas leading the all-time series, 3-0. The two teams, which had a three-match series from 2007-09, have not met in six years to the day, since a 2-0 victory by Georgetown on Sept. 8, 2009 at Hill Field House. Tuesday's match will also mark the third time in the series' four meetings that the Hoyas will visit the Baltimore campus.
Morgan State (1-6) enters the contest coming off a 1-2 weekend in Chicago at the UIC Invitational. After dropping the first two matches of the tournament, the Lady Bears picked up their first set wins and victory of the season with a sweep over Chicago State in the finale.
Arianna Hayden played her best match of the season, finishing with a match-high 16 kills, a hitting percentage of .333, a match-high three blocks and added seven digs in the win over Chicago State.
Keana Browne, who was named to the all-tournament team, finished with nine kills, three digs and a solo block, and had a hitting percentage of .368.
Samantha Prescott had a match-high 15 digs, while
Carmen Fernandez collected her first double-double of the season, recording a match-high 33 assists and 13 digs. Fernandez also had a match-high five service aces for the Lady Bears, which totaled 13 aces as a team.
Morgan State (1-6) finished the match recording a season-best 41 kills and had a .202 hitting percentage. Chicago State finished with 28 kills and a .139 hitting percentage.
The Lady Bears have been led offensively by Hayden, who is averaging 2.57 kills per set, while Browne is second with 2.39 kills.
Samantha Prescott leads the team with 73 digs and
Carmen Fernandez has tallied a team-leading 96 assists and a team-high seven service aces.
Monette Daniels and Hayden lead the Lady Bears with nine blocks.
Georgetown (2-4) is coming off a 1-2 weekend also. The Hoyas, who were competing in the Rose Hill Classic hosted by Fordham, ended a two-match losing skid with a sweep of Niagara in their last match of the tournament.
Alyssa Sinnette tallied a match-high 17 kills and Symone Speech added 10 kills in the win over Niagara. Sinnette and Speech were both named to the all-tournament team. Paige McKnight finished with a match-high 35 assists and 10 digs to record a double-double. Kenzie Higareda collected a team-high 11 digs.
Sinnette leads the Hoyas with 3.50 kills per set and ranks second in digs with 2.21 per set. Speech is averaging 2.54 kills per set and has a team-high 21 blocks on the season. McKnight has a team-leading 8.71 assists per outing and leads Georgetown with 11 service aces. Higareda has totaled a team-high 4.96 digs per set.
