BALTIMORE, Md. -- Coming off of a very tough road trip, the Morgan State Bears came home to what amounted to nothing more than a warm-up in a 61-0 trouncing of the Virginia-Lynchburg Dragons at Hughes Stadium. It won't officially count in the MEAC or NCAA, but the Bears found a way to have some fun and work everyone out in preparation for conference play next week.
Â
It only took 15 seconds for the defending MEAC champs to spring into action as quarterback
Moses Skillon connected with
Ricky Fisk for a 69-yard touchdown pass. After an interception, Fisk scored again on a 24-yard touchdown run to help make it 14-0 in favor of the Bears with 12:42 left.
Â
MSU's (0-2) defense joined the scoring party when on a fourth down from the Dragons' two yard line,
Brandon Griffin snuffed out a fake punt and tackled Sherman Brown for a safety. That increased the Bears' advantage to 16-0 with 10:34 left.
Â
Then it was the
Andrew King show to finish off what was a fantastic first quarter. King started it off by receiving a 62-yard touchdown pass from Skillon with 9:32 remaining, increasing the Bears' lead to 23-0. Then nearly seven minutes later, these two hooked up again. This time from 12 yards out with 2:49 left to help make it 30-0 MSU. Then they finished the fireworks with a 13-yard TD pass from Skillon to King with 7.4 seconds left. The extra point by
Chris Moller made the score 37-0. It remained that way to end the quarter. "It was just good preparation from the week before," said King of his day. "We were able to connect today. So, thank the Lord. It was a blessing."
Â
Morgan State head coach
Lee Hull was pleased with the early Morgan State fireworks. "We wanted to try and get off to a fast start and we did. We ran all go's and I just wanted to see if the O-line could protect and give Moses [Skillon] some time. I knew we could run by them and that's what happened. We executed perfectly."
Â
Skillon got in on the scoring in the second quarter when he ran the ball in from five yards out to help his Bears take a 44-0 lead with 9:22 left. Moller added a 36 yard field goal with 4:36 left to give the Bears what would be an eventual halftime advantage at 47-0.
Â
There would be no more scoring until the fourth quarter when
Amihr Bess ran the ball in from 1 yard out to help make the score 54-0 with 13:01 remaining. Capping off the day was
Grayling Harrison, who scored when he received a 37-yard touchdown pass from
Chris Clack Jr. with 10:04 left.
