Hampton, Cornish help Morgan State upset Norfolk State 73-70

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Andrew Hampton hit five 3-pointers and scored 17 points -- both career highs -- and Cliff Cornish hit two free throws and blocked a shot in the final seconds to help Morgan State upset Norfolk State 73-70 on Saturday.

Hampton, a sophomore walk-on, had played just 28 minutes and scored nine points all season before hitting 6 of 7 field goals, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range.

"We did a really good job tonight against them," said Hampton. "They beat us last time, so we were definitely looking to get a win tonight."

"It was real big for us to get this win," said Hampton. Coach Bozeman has been telling me to shoot the ball. He's been really wanting me to shoot, but I've been passing up shots all year. So I went in there and made sure I got them up and they were dropping today. My teammates were finding me 'E-Man' (Emmanuel Matey) and Blake [Bozeman] did a great job of finding me tonight, so I was just able to hit them and shoot with confidence. Everything just worked out and we got the W tonight."

Cedric Blossom scored 19 for Morgan State (7-18, 5-6 Mid-Eastern). Emmanuel Matey had seven points and eight assists.

Jamel Fuentes made a layup and Jeff Short hit two free throws to give Norfolk State (16-11, 9-3) a one-point lead with 55 seconds left.

Cornish made a pair of free throws to give Morgan State a 71-70 lead with 28 seconds to play before blocking a layup by Short. Blake Bozeman was fouled after grabbing the rebound and his two free throws closed the scoring.

Short led Norfolk State with 17 points.

MSU head coach Todd Bozeman was pleased with how his team played tonight.

"It was a big win for us, because they're a tough team and they've been playing tough all year," Bozeman said.  "So it was big for us and I was just proud of the guys because at the end they were gritty... they showed some grit and we've been looking for that all year."

"The guys toughed it out and made our free throws at the end (12 of 15) and we've been waiting on that all year as well too. Obviously, Andrew Hampton played a big game for us and it's not a surprise to me, it's just that he hit them in the game --  I've been waiting two years for him to do that. I'm happy for him. He stepped up big for us here and gave us some answers when we were looking for them."
