BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Morgan State Bears came into this game on a three-game winning streak and looked to ride some momentum into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament.
Unfortunately for the Bears, they ran into a Hampton team that couldn't miss, and Morgan couldn't buy a shot in their 93-65 loss to the Pirates at Hill Field House on Monday night in front of an ESPNU audience.
Â
Both teams played a close game early. Hampton was only up 13-12 until Morgan's shooting went as frigid as the weather was outside when it came to their shooting from the field. No matter where they were shooting from, the Bears' shots weren't falling and Hampton (11-14, 7-5 MEAC) took advantage with a 20-2 run.
Hampton guard Brian Darden couldn't be stopped from three-point range. He hit six of his seven three-point attempts on the night, leading the Pirates with a 23-point performance. Even though Darden made two three-pointers during the run, it was Reginald Johnson who made his presence felt. Johnson scored nine of his 17 points on the night during the run. That included a lay-up with 9:26 remaining in the first half to give the Pirates a 33-14 lead.
Â
After
Rasean Simpson, who led the Bears with a career-high 23 points, converted a lay-up with 8:33 remaining, Morgan State (7-19, 5-7 MEAC) went on another drought. The Bears didn't convert another field goal in the first half, only making four of their five free throws in that stretch and missing 11 straight shot attempts. Most of those misses were because of Hampton blocking five of the Bears' shot attempts in the first half. The Pirates blocked seven shots on the night. The Bears only made seven of their 32 first half shot attempts for a 21.9 percent clip.
Â
Hampton had the golden touch from what seemed like anywhere on the court. The Pirates shot 60.7 percent from the field in the first half. Especially from three-point range as they made half of their three-point attempts (8-of-16).
Â
Morgan State head coach
Todd Bozeman didn't have much to say after the game. But he summed it up like this, "We didn't come to play. That was it. Hats off to (Hampton). It's a funny game. Hampton had lost six in a row at one point. Clearly, we weren't playing great, but we won three in a row. That's what happens so we're moving on."
Â
Hampton would lead by as much as 38 in the second half at 61-23 with 16:10 left. The Bears made a little dent into the deficit by closing to within 25 on two Simpson free throws with 11:53 left which closed a stretch where he scored eight consecutive points, making the score 66-41 in the Pirates' favor.
Â
That run may have injected a bit of hope into the Hill Field House supporters. However, that was as close as MSU got as the Pirates went on a 15-3 run to squash that hope, capped by a Charles Wilson-Fisher lay-up to extend the Pirate margin again to 81-44 with eight minutes remaining.
Â
"We're healthy," said Hampton head coach Edward Joyner Jr. said about his Pirates. "We went through that stretch where we were having problems. Deron (Powers) was hurt, Jervon (Pressley) was hurt and Brian (Darden) had a hip pointer. We had a bunch of guys hurt. Now we're healthy. So we feel like we could make a run for it again."
Â
While Hampton heads home to host Delaware State on Saturday, Morgan hits the road again. The Bears head to Durham, North Carolina starting on Saturday to take on the first place and undefeated N.C. Central Eagles in a rematch of the MEAC Championship game. Tip is at 4 pm.
