Lady Bears Head To Annapolis To Compete In Navy Classic

Morgan State Game Notes

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 27, 2015)-The Morgan State women's basketball team will look to put an end to its three-game losing skid, when it travels to Annapolis, Md. to compete in the Navy Classic (Nov. 27-28), hosted by the US Naval Academy. It will mark the first time Morgan State will be playing in the State of Maryland since its home– and season-opener on Nov. 15. The Lady Bears will first face Colorado State on Friday, Nov. 27 at 3:30 p.m., before taking on either host Navy or Siena on Saturday to conclude the tournament. This will be Morgan State's first regular season appearance at Navy since the 2005-06 season.
 
BEAR CLAWS: The Lady Bears (1-3) dropped their third consecutive game, following a 90-61 loss at No. 23 Syracuse on Monday in the Carrier Dome. The Lady Bears led 21-19 after the first quarter, and also outscored the Orange, 21-17 in the third. But it was an 11-0 run in the second quarter and a 31-6 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter that propelled the Orange to its 70th straight non-conference victory at home. Tykyrah Williams came off the bench to lead Morgan State with a career– and game-high 25 points. Williams connected on 9-of-14 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from three-point range and added eight rebounds and five assists, both team highs. Braennan Farra added 22 points, including 5-for-9 shooting from beyond the three-point arc to go with seven rebounds and two assists. Morgan State shot 29 percent (20-of-69) for the game and was 8-of-19 (42 percent) from three-point range. Syracuse shot 34 percent (28-of-81) from the floor, including 13-of-43 (30 percent) from the three-point arc.
 
BATTLING THE RAMS: Colorado State (3-1) is coming off its first loss of the season, following a 49-48 defeat at Penn (11/24). Keyora Wharry recorded a double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and also added a game-high three steals. The Rams have been paced by Wharry, who is averaging 11 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Ellen Nystrom is averaging 9.0 points and leads the squad with a total of 12 steals and 11 assists.
 
MSU VS. COLORADO STATE SERIES NOTES: This will be the first meeting between the two teams.
 
MORGAN VS. THE MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE: The Lady Bears are a combined 1-1 against members of the Mountain West Conference (MWC). Here's how Morgan State has faired against the MWC: New Mexico (0-1) and San Jose State (1-0). The Lady Bears have never met Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, San Diego State, Utah State, UNLV or Wyoming.
 
A LOOK AT THE MIDSHIPMEN: Navy improved to 3-1 on the season after its 73-70 double overtime victory over visiting Elon on Wednesday. Ashanti Kennedy scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Sarita Condie added 17 points and a game-high six steals, while Bianca Roach added 12 points. Kennedy leads the team in scoring with 15.8 points and rebounding with a team-high 7.8 per game. Condie is averaging 12.8 points and leads the team with a total of 16 assists.
 
MSU VS. NAVY SERIES NOTES: The series is tied at 7-7. Morgan State won the first four meetings of the series, but the Midshipmen have won the last two meetings and five of the past six contests. The teams last met on Dec. 6, 2005 with Navy claiming a 79-50 victory in Annapolis.
 
MORGAN VS. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE: The Lady Bears are 16-18 all-time against members of the Patriot League. Here's how Morgan State has done against the Patriot League: American (5-3), Army (0-2), Bucknell (1-2), Colgate (1-0), Holy Cross (0-1), Lafayette (2-2), Lehigh (0-1) and Navy (7-7).
 
SCOUTING THE SAINTS: Siena (0-4) last played on Nov. 21, where they suffered a 57-53 loss to Alabama State in a Preseason WNIT consolation game. The Saints were led by Meghan Donohue and Kollyns Scarbrough, who each scored 12 points. Emmanuella Edoka grabbed 12 rebounds. Scarbrough, who has reached double figures in scoring in every game this season, leads the team in scoring with 12.8 points per game. Edoka is pulling down a team-leading 6.0 rebounds per outing.
 
MSU VS. SIENA SERIERS NOTES: This will be the first meeting between the two programs.
 
MORGAN VS. THE MAAC: The Lady Bears are a combined 3-19 against members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Here's how the Lady Bears have done against the MAAC: Canisius (0-1), Fairfield (1-1), Manhattan (0-1), Marist (0-2), Monmouth (0-2), Quinnipiac (0-1), Rider (1-1) and Saint Peter's (1-10). Morgan State have never faced Iona, Niagara or Siena.
 
NEXT UP: Following the Navy Classic the Lady Bears will travel to Moon Township, Pa. to meet Robert Morris in a non-conference game on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.
 
 
MAKE IT A DOUBLE: Sophomore Braennan Farrar recorded a double-double in the season opening win over Washington Adventist (11/15). The St. Louis, Mo. native tallied a game-high 22 points, while adding a career– and game-high 12 assists against the Lady Shock.
 
PROVIDING ASSISTANCE: Braennan Farrar dished out a career-best 12 assists against Washington Adventist (11/15). It surpassed her previous high of nine assists set last season against Wesley (11/18/14).
 
MORGAN IN SEASON OPENERS: The Lady Bears improved to 11-28 all-time in season openers dating back to 1977, following its 74-36 home victory over Washington Adventist (11/15). It was the first season opening win for the Lady Bears in three years, since a 72-61 home victory over the University of Maryland Baltimore County (11/9/12). Morgan State at one point had lost 23 straight season openers, prior to winning three straight from 2006-08. Last season the Lady Bears opened up on the road and suffered a 68-32 loss to Georgia (11/14/14).
 
MORGAN PICKED NINTH IN MEAC: Morgan State was picked to finish ninth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) preseason poll, as voted by the league's head coaches and sports information directors. Last year, the Lady Bears were picked to finish last (13th), but put together an 11-19 overall mark and finished 8-8 in the MEAC to finish seventh.
  
FARRAR NAMED TO PRESEASON MEAC SECOND TEAM: Sophomore guard Braennan Farrar was named to the Preseason All-MEAC second team. A native of St. Louis, Mo., Farrar was second on the team in scoring (13.9), while leading the Lady Bears in assists with 2.6 per game. She also led the team in steals (67) and three-pointers made (45).
 
BEASLEY ALL-TIME COACHIING LEADER: Morgan State head coach Donald Beasley, who is in his 11th year at the helm of the Lady Bears, became the program's all-time coaching leader last season. Beasley, who surpassed LaRue Fields (122-60 from 1979-85), as the winningest coach (123-166), following a 57-50 win over Florida A&M (1/17/15), currently holds a 129-178 all-time record at Morgan State. Beasley recorded his first career victory in the 10th game of the 2005-06 season, following a 66-54 road win at Bethune-Cookman (1/9/06).
 
DOUBLE DUTY: Senior forward Dinah Jones has been going nonstop since stepping foot on the Morgan State campus in early August of 2012 for her freshman season. The 6-foot-1 native of Annapolis, Md. is also a three-year letterwinner on the Morgan State volleyball team. Jones averaged 5.2 points and was second on the team in rebounding (5.2) and third in steals (33) last season. She also added 20 assists and five blocks. This season on the volleyball court, she helped the Lady Bears to a 13-15 mark, 9-3 in the MEAC Northern Division, which was good for second-place. Over the weekend the Lady Bears would reach the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time since the 2007 season, before falling to Bethune-Cookman in three sets on Saturday, Nov. 21.
