Lady Bears To Battle Defending MEAC Champion Hampton On Monday

Morgan State will conclude its brief early season two-game stint in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play, when it visits defending MEAC champion Hampton on Monday, Dec. 8. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center in Hampton, Va. The game will be the MEAC opener for Hampton. This will be the 38th all-time meeting between the two teams with the Lady Pirates holding a 26-11 advantage over Morgan State.
  
BEAR CLAWS: The Lady Bears (2-6, 0-1 MEAC), losers of a season-long four consecutive games, will look to also end a two-game losing skid to the Spartans, after dropping both contests last season. Morgan State enters the game coming off a 68-63 road loss at Norfolk State in the MEAC opener on Saturday. Morgan State's freshmen led the way, as Lexus Spears scored a career-high 15 points and Eva Myers added a career-high 13 points, including four three-pointers. Fellow freshman Braennan Farrar added 10 points and had a game-high five assists against the Spartans. The Lady Bears have been led by Carrington, who is averaging 19.3 points per game, which ranks fourth in the MEAC. Carrington, who has not played in a game-and-a-half since getting injured prior to halftime in the Bucknell game, also ranks second in rebounding (5.1 per game), assists (15) and steals (15). Farrar is averaging 8.1 points per contest, while Ivy Harrington is coming off the bench to contribute eight points per outing. Harrington leads the MEAC in field goal percentage at 56.8 (25-of-44). Dinah Jones, who has played in the last two games since rejoining the team following the volleyball season, is averaging a team-leading six rebounds per game for Morgan State.
 
PIRATES LOG: Hampton (2-5, 0-0 MEAC), which after beginning the season dropping its first five games has since won two straight, following its 64-53 road win at Richmond (12/6). Malia Tate-DeFreitas led four Lady Pirates in double figures scoring with 16 points. Kenia Cole and Ryan Jordan each scored 14 points, while Ryan grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Kyani White added 12 points. The Lady Pirates have been led by Tate-DeFreitas, who is averaging a team-leading 20.4 points per game, which also ranks first among MEAC leaders. DeFreitas has a team-high 20 steals and ranks tied for third on the team in rebounds with Jordan at 5.1 per contest. Cole, who is averaging nine points per game, leads the team in assists with 4.3 per game, which ranks third among MEAC leaders and ranks second on the team in steals with 12. Tyler Hobgood (8.1 rebounds) and Brielle Ward (5.8 rebounds) rank first and second, respectively on the team. Hobgood ranks fourth in the MEAC standings in rebounding. As a team the Lady Pirates lead the MEAC in three point field goals made per game with 6.1.
 
MSU VS. HAMPTON SERIES NOTES: Hampton leads the all-time series, 26-11. The Lady Pirates, who swept last season's series, have won eight straight over Morgan State.
 
NEXT UP: The Lady Bears will return home for the final time in 2014, when they play host to Stony Brook in a non-conference game on Saturday, Dec. 13. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Hill Field House.  
 
BEASLEY FOUR WINS SHY OF SCHOOL RECORD: Morgan State head coach Donald Beasley, who is in his 10th year at the helm of the Lady Bears, is four wins shy of becoming the program's all-time coaching leader. Beasley, who currently ranks second on the school's all-time list with a mark of 119-161, earned his second win of the season against Washington Adventists (11/20). LaRue Fields (122-60 from 1979-85) is the school's all-time leader.
 
SPEARS, MYERS HAVE CAREER OUTINGS AT NORFOLK STATE: Fellow freshmen Lexus Spears and Eva Myers each tallied career highs in scoring at Norfolk State (12/6). Spears scored a team- and career-high 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting and tied a team-high seven rebounds and added two steals. Her 15 points surpassed her previous high of 13 points against Wesley (11/18). Myers scored 13 points to surpass her previous mark of seven points at Georgia Tech (11/16). Myers also knocked down all four of the Lady Bears' three-pointers against Norfolk State.
 
MORGAN STATE IN MEAC OPENERS: The Lady Bears fell to 5-5 in MEAC openers under head coach Donald Beasley, following Saturday's 68-63 road loss at Norfolk State. The Norfolk State contest marked just the fifth time in 16 seasons that the Lady Bears did not open the MEAC season against crosstown rival Coppin State.
 
TRACKING CARRINGTON: Tracey Carrington entered the season with 1,137 career points, which ranked ninth all-time at Morgan State. Carrington, who ranks seventh at Morgan State, scored a team-high 12 points at Bucknell (12/3) to give her 1,272 points for her career. She is now 16 points shy of passing former Lady Bear Whitney Cunningham (1,287 points from 2004-07) for sixth-place. She now needs 303 more points to move into second all-time in scoring at Morgan State.
 
CARRINGTON NAMED MEAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Tracey Carrington was named MEAC Player of the week by the league office for the week of Nov. 24. Carrington averaged 25 points, eight rebounds and three steals to help the Lady Bears to a 2-1 week. She scored a game-high 27 points, grabbed five rebounds and had two steals against Texas Tech (11/23). Carrington also paced Morgan State with 27 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals in a win against Wesley (11/18).
  
PROVIDING ASSISTANCE: Freshman Braennan Farrar dished out a game-high five assists at Norfolk State (12/6), giving her a team-leading 23 assists through eight games. Farrar recorded a season-high nine assists in the win over Wesley (11/18). As a team the Lady Bears recorded 19 assists in that game.
 
HARRINGTON SETS SCHOOL RECORD FOR SHOTS MADE: Ivy Harrington connected on her first four shots in the win over Wesley (11/18), to set the school record for consecutive baskets made (two or more attempts per game) at 14 straight. She began the streak in the opener against Georgia (11/14) when she scored on her final attempt of the game, then shot a perfect 9-for-9 from the floor at Georgia Tech (11/16). Her streak came to an end at the 6:07 mark of the first half against Wesley, when she missed on her fifth attempt, a jumper from the right side.
 
MAKE IT A DOUBLE: Freshman Lexus Spears recorded the first double-double of her young career when she totaled 13 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, both of which are season-bests in the win against Wesley (11/18).
 
WILLIAMS NAMED MEAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Freshman Tykyrah Williams was named MEAC Rookie of the Week by the league office on Nov. 17. A native of Durham, N.C., Williams scored a season-best thus far 13 points on the road at Georgia Tech (11/16). Williams also added a team-high five rebounds three assists and a team-high three steals against the Yellow Jackets.
