Lady Bears Open MEAC Season At Norfolk State On Saturday

BALTIMORE, Md. (Dec. 4, 2014)-Morgan State will step out of non-conference action this weekend when it visits Norfolk State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest this Saturday, Dec. 6 at 4 p.m. at Echols Hall in Norfolk, Va. The game will be the MEAC opener for both teams. This will be the 32nd all-time meeting between the two teams with Norfolk State holding an 18-13 advantage over Morgan State.
   
BEAR CLAWS: The Lady Bears (2-5), losers of their last three games, will look to also end a two-game losing skid to the Spartans, after dropping both contests last season. Morgan State enters the game coming off a 79-50 road loss at Bucknell on Wednesday. Tracey Carrington, who only played in the first half of the game, scored a team-high 12 points. Tykyrah Williams finished with eight points and Jayde Duncan tallied a team-high seven rebounds. Morgan State trailed 36-34 at halftime, but a 34-5 run to start the second half by Bucknell, blew the game wide open at 70-39 with under nine minutes left to play. The Lady Bears have been led by Carrington, who is averaging 19.3 points per game, which ranks fourth in the MEAC. Carrington, who is tied for the team lead with Zuri White in rebounding with 5.1 per game, also ranks second on the squad in assists (15) and steals (15).
  
SPARTAN LEGION: Norfolk State (1-5) was dealt a 69-64 overtime loss to Nicholls State on Day 2 of the Teresa Phillips Thanksgiving Classic, hosted by Tennessee State (11/30). Rae Corbo scored a game-high 21 points and had a game-high five assists and Kayla Roberts added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Spartans. Jazamine Gray pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds in the loss. Corbo has led the Spartans in scoring with 18.8 per game and in assists with 21, while Roberts is adding 12.7 points and is tied with Amber Brown for the team lead in rebounding at 6.5 per game. Roberts, who has received the MEAC' Rookie of the Week award the past two weeks, leads Norfolk State in steals (8) and blocks (3).
 
MSU VS. NORFOLK STATE SERIES NOTES: Norfolk State leads the all-time series, 18-13. The Spartans who have won three of the last four meetings, swept last season's games, winning 61-52 in Norfolk (1/18) and 64-63 in Baltimore (2/8).
 
NEXT UP: The Lady Bears will conclude their swing through the Tidewater area of Virginia when they visit defending MEAC champion Hampton on Monday, Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center in Hampton, Va. The Lady Pirates swept last season's series and have won eight straight over Morgan State.
 
MORGAN STATE IN MEAC OPENERS: The Lady Bears, who will open up the 2014-15 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) slate on the road against Norfolk State (12/6), are 5-4 in MEAC openers under head coach Donald Beasley, following last season's home loss to Howard. This year's Norfolk State contest will mark just the fifth time in 16 season's that the Lady Bears will not open the MEAC season against crosstown rival Coppin State.
 
TRACKING CARRINGTON: Tracey Carrington entered the season with 1,137 career points, which ranked ninth all-time at Morgan State. Carrington, who ranks seventh at Morgan State, scored a team-high 12 points at Bucknell (12/3), giving her 1,272 points for her career. She is now 16 points shy of passing former Lady Bear Whitney Cunningham (1,287 points from 2004-07) for sixth-place. She now needs 303 more points to move into second all-time in scoring at Morgan State.
 
CARRINGTON NAMED MEAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Tracey Carrington was named MEAC Player of the week by the league office for the week of Nov. 24. Carrington averaged 25 points, eight rebounds and three steals to help the Lady Bears to a 2-1 week. She scored a game-high 27 points, grabbed five rebounds and had two steals against Texas Tech (11/23). Carrington also paced Morgan State with 27 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals in a win against Wesley (11/18).
 
BEASLEY FOUR WINS SHY OF SCHOOL RECORD: Morgan State head coach Donald Beasley, who is in his 10th year at the helm of the Lady Bears, is four wins shy of becoming the program's all-time coaching leader. Beasley, who currently ranks second on the school's all-time list with a mark of 119-160, earned his second win of the season against Washington Adventists (11/20). LaRue Fields (122-60 from 1979-85) is the school's all-time leader.
 
PROVIDING ASSISTANCE: Freshman Braennan Farrar dished out a game- and season-high nine assists in the win over Wesley (11/18). As a team the Lady Bears recorded 19 assists in the game. Farrar leads Morgan State in assists with 18 through the first seven games.
 
HARRINGTON SETS SCHOOL RECORD FOR SHOTS MADE: Ivy Harrington connected on her first four shots in the win over Wesley (11/18), to set the school record for consecutive baskets made (two or more attempts per game) at 14 straight. She began the streak in the opener against Georgia (11/14) when she scored on her final attempt of the game, then shot a perfect 9-for-9 from the floor at Georgia Tech (11/16). Her streak came to an end at the 6:07 mark of the first half against Wesley, when she missed on her fifth attempt, a jumper from the right side.
 
MAKE IT A DOUBLE: Freshman Lexus Spears recorded the first double-double of her young career when she totaled a 13 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, both of which are season-bests in the win against Wesley (11/18).
 
WILLIAMS NAMED MEAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Freshman Tykyrah Williams was named MEAC Rookie of the Week by the league office on Nov. 17. A native of Durham, N.C., Williams scored a season-best thus far 13 points on the road at Georgia Tech (11/16). Williams also added a team-high five rebounds three assists and a team-high three steals against the Yellow Jackets.
